NO SOUND!!
It was the month of May. Trees in Harvard Yard Were turning a young green. There was whispering everywhere.
Seamus Heaney, from “Canopy”, Human Chain
chain la cadena
Imagine the Canadians making a human chain around Canada.
2 Million Latvians, Estonians, and Lithuanians came together in one of the largest protests against the USSR known as the Baltic Way or Baltic Chain. August 23rd, 1989
On August 23, 1989, about 2 million people from Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania formed a human chain that united all 3 countries to show the world their desire to escape the Soviet Union and the communism that brought only suffering and poverty.
This power stretched 600 km.
No mobile phones or internet to organise this. No bottled water to sustain them. Just people power.
Approx 50,000 people formed a human chain that stretched 20 miles across Lithuania, to express solidarity with protesters in Belarus who are fighting back against the country's authoritarian regime.
The protest coincided with the 31st anniversary of the 1989 Baltic Way, when more than 2 million people participated in a human chain across Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia in support of an end to the then-Soviet rule of the three countries.
