What living thing was the first to sleep? The first to dream?

There are sleep studies that show dreams improve recall. Basically they have people do mazes while smelling peppermint, then everyone takes a nap. Some get peppermint as they nap, others some other smell. The peppermint people do better. This study was done on BEES with the same result. Do we share a common dreaming ancestor with insects that could dream? Or is dreaming so useful that it's evolved multiple times? I need answers now!
