Proximal humerus fracture

The anatomic parts of the proximal humerus are the humeral head, the anatomic neck, the greater and lesser tuberosity and surgical neck. Treatment with no or minimal displacement includes immoblization and early range of motion. More severe angulation requires orthopedic referral for operative fixation.

Humeral shaft fracture

Secondary to direct blow to humerus. Non-displaced fractures are stabilized with a coaptation splint with sling and swath or a hanging cast. The most common complication is radial nerve injury causing weakness of the wrist and digit extensors and numbness of the dorsoradial aspect of the hand. Patients with neurovascular compromise or comminuted or displaced fractures should have orthopedic consultation.
