Their friendship grew and grew until it started morphing into something else—something scary and exciting all at once.
But good things don’t always last. In the spring of Stiles’ nineteenth year, Derek never came. Stiles waited at their bridge for all of spring. Stiles hoped that Derek would return the following spring, but he didn’t. Three years pass and Stiles has given up hope that he’d ever seen Derek again, praying that Derek was alive and safe somewhere. Stiles couldn’t even fathom a world where Derek wasn’t somewhere in it so he refused to believe there was an alternative.
The spring of the fourth year, early in the morning, there’s a soft knock at stiles door. Stiles opens the door to find Derek standing on his doorstep. His huntsman has returned.
Derek apologizes for leaving so long. He tells Stiles about his adventures; how his father and him parted ways and how he was almost forced to marry a wealth French baroness who was obsessed with him. When Stiles asks why Derek didn’t want to marry the baroness, Derek gives him a small smile and gently takes Stiles’ hand in his own. "Because I had someone waiting for me."
After Derek returns, he surprises everyone in the village when he stays during the winter. There were whispers that he had finally settled down, that his adventuring days were over. Most believed it would be short lived since Derek was known to be a free spirit and never able to stay in one place, but winter became spring, then summer and became autumn, and Derek was still there in the Stilinski house, as happy as can be with his partner, Stiles.
