Hurler at Carowinds!
<- Previous | Start | Next ->
Opened: 1994 Manufacturer: International Coasters Inc. Height: 83 ft (25 m) Speed: 50 mph (80 kph) Length: 3,157 ft (962 m) My most recent ride: 2019
Carowinds' Hurler is the same layout and ride as Hurler formerly at Kings Dominion, which I covered a few weeks ago. The rides are largely the same, but there are some key differences between the two that led me to place this one a fair bit higher than the other.
First and foremost, Carowinds' Hurler is significantly smoother than Kings Dominion's was. When I last rode Hurler in 2019, it had just gotten a significant amount of re-tracking done on it, so it was running really smoothly. That is a big plus over how bad KD's Hurler was the last time I rode that one in 2013.
Unfortunately, the smoothness does not save Carowinds' Hurler from the other problem it shared with Kings Dominion's: The ride is just boring. It has some fairly strong positive forces in the big low to the ground turnarounds it has, but beyond that, the ride just does not do anything interesting. The ride has a trim break right after the first drop that saps it of a lot of its speed, leading to just crawl through the rest of its layout. This also removes any potential for airtime the ride would have gotten over its hills. It does have a teeny bit maybe, but nothing substantial by any means.
Carowinds really deserves a better wooden coaster, something from GCI or the Gravity Group, since at the moment, Hurler is the park's only adult wooden coaster. If they get a new high-thrill wooden coaster, they can either remove Hurler completely, or call in RMC and have them work their magic. Can you imagine how crazy it would be to have an RMC right there next to Fury 325? I wouldn't wanna leave that plaza any time I visit lmao.
Thanks for checking out today's coaster post! Keep an eye out for tomorrow's coaster!
