Okay while I'm enjoying Secret Empire so far, the recent tie-in Captain America: Steve Rogers #17 just came out and the Magneto scene is so...fucking...stupid! It's quite obvious Nick Spencer doesn't get Magneto at all. To recap the reason the X-Men aren't involved in Secret Empire (so far) is because Hydra-Cap made a deal with Eric that the X-Men don't attack Hydra, as well as stall the other Hydra leaders from sending mutants in concentration camps, in exchange for a sovereign nation and Red Skulls decapitated head (which contains Charles Xavier's brain). Basically this is an allegory to Hitler and Stalin's early alliance in WWII. And Magneto is not Stalin! Magneto would never accept anything from Hydra. The man is holocaust survivor and he knows the horrors Hydra is committing to Inhumans. While the issues theme that some people are willing to let atrocities happen if they are safe, but Magneto doesn't play that game. He would atrack the first instant In fact he's aware that Hydra will eventually attack the Mutants, so the idea of Magneto willing to leave Hydra alone so he can keep Mutants safe is now entirely pointless. I'm one of the few people who enjoy Secret Empire and Nick Spencer's works, but this genuinely pretty bad.

Secret Empire #2 (July 2017)

Last summer Secret Empire was Marvel’s big event. You know Hydra-Cap (aka Nazi-Cap) and all that. I wrote some about it for a chapter I contributed to the forthcoming scholarly anthology, Unstable Masks: Whiteness and the American Superhero.  Frankly, I only got these series so I could do that writing, because like most crossover events, this was not good.  

That said, unlike a lot of people, I don’t object to Hydra-Cap, because it fits in perfectly with my view of the white supremacist underpinnings of American society. I just object to how poorly it was handled. Nick Spencer has great comedic chops in comics, but his serious work needs work.

Secret Empire #3 (July 2017)

This is a creepy cover for a not very good comic in a terrible series. 

Personally, I was not against the notion of Hydra-Cap. I just think how it was written and drawn and played out in the greater Marvel Universe was just more evidence that “event” comics suck. I followed this series for a chapter I am writing for an anthology on Whiteness & the American Superhero, and even considered writing about it more specifically for The Middle Spaces, but then I saw this article and realized it basically said what I would have.

HYDRA Cap?

The whole Hydra-Cap-Debacle is such a cheap crap shot for a little publicity and every time we talk about it we throw more money at the marvel executives. It's like trying to put a fire out by throwing money at it and I hate that a discussion about their poor as fuck choices literally generates revenue they don't deserve. 

I kinda wanna sit around and pretend that this company, the company many people have loved for decades, isn't just trying to get money by any means necessary. That’s literally impossible though because Marvel is trying (and succeeding!!) to turn an uproar, a protest, into money, they are preventing us from properly participating in the debate by going by the motto that any publicity is good publicity. 

They do not care about their readers or their fanbase and that trend is abysmal especially considering how offensive it is to all the people who have suffered by the hands of actual Nazis. Who are still suffering at the hands of Nazis. (Neo-Nazis people, Neo-Nazis) 

Don’t even get me started on how terrible the storytelling is, it’s cheap, unnecessarily “shocking” and just completely against everything Cap has stood for in the last 70+ years. And also so far off from what the people actually want that I'm not surprised if the Marvel think tank turns out to be Microsoft’s teenage Twitter AI. (and fucking Nick Spencer has the audacity to be proud of this whole thing as well as super fucking smug, I hope that guy eats his terrible writing and chokes) 

I hate that we by trying to have a discussion we are literally doing exactly what the want from us, they are preventing us from participating without playing into their scheme. Every piece of fanart, every tweet and even every fix-it is literally paper in Marvel’s hands and I hate to think that they are exploiting a loyal fanbase like that. (but they are, they are fucking exploiting us) 

Please do not buy any of the comics, show them that they can not do whatever the fuck they want.
