[A picture of the book A Hero at the End of the World by Erin Claiborne.] An ebay bargain I've been waiting a month for finally arrived today. I love the story by Erin Claiborne (@eleveninches), but it's the cover art by Jade Liebes (@hydrae) that always blows me away about this book. To actually hold it in my hands is lovely. I'll be seeking out the other two Big Bang Press books in the future, though they're somewhat rarer and harder to find. Read if you like books with authors who took Harry Potter and ran sideways with it, making it queer along the way, like Carry On by Rainbow Rowell.
15. Do they wear anything special for certain holidays or religious ceremonies? What are they?
Mainly it is the priest/priestess that will wear special attire for cermonies. Masks, unique jewelry and additional body paints is part of that outfit.
Then for weddings the couple will be dressed up in special garbs, often slightly customized and adjusted for the individuals involved with a lot more colour than what the tribe’s common attire is. The finest clothes and jewelry the tribe got, charms for good fortune and health.
How are children treated as a whole in the tribe? Do they have schools? Hunting grounds? Playgrounds? Do they work or do they play?
In Hydrae, children are treated with care and viewed as treasures. Everyone assists in teaching them the ways of life in the tribe, jobs to be done and beliefs, so their "school" would essentially be the child accompanying adults on their work routine. Normally they will have the options to choose themselves what tasks they want to try out (if they can't decide themselves they will be passed around different tasks until they find what suits them) and aren't expected to spend every day with chores, many days are dedicated to just allowing the children be kids and play, though there are no playgrounds. As children grow older, expectations also grow on them to find their spot to fill.
Dangerous tasks, such as merchant journeys, mining and hunting rarely includes young children and is greatly situational wether they are brought along for it or not. They'd need to be a very dedicated kid to be allowed to learn such tasks early on.
However these more careful treatments can change. If the tribe is suffering in numbers and face difficult days (like it did when Dubus was born), children were forced to work. Easier jobs such as cooking, herding, some crafts and even child caretaking were tasked to the eldest children so the adults could mine, hunt and travel for resources.
