MY ANNOYING BROTHER
I’ve heard of siblings fighting each other all the time, and since I’m an only child, I could never relate to, or had the chance to go toe-to-toe with a sibling. My Annoying Brother highlights both the love, and hate present in a sibling relationship.
But I must warn you, if you haven’t watched this film as yet, you might need tissues.
The film opens up b introducing us to Ko Doo Young, a promising judo athlete who has his entire life ahead of him. Things are going well for Ko Doo Young until an injury in one of his matches, causes him to lose his eyesight.
The world is now a dark and scary place for Ko Doo Young, and so he closes off himself from everyone around him, by isolating himself in his family’s home. Aside from his coach, Ko Doo Young has no one to look out for him, and he has somewhat come to terms with his new predicament.
We then meet Ko Doo Sik, Doo Young’s older brother, who also happens to be serving time in prison for fraud. Doo Young’s injury seems be Doo Sik’s get-out-of-jail card, and once he utilizes his brother’s loss of eyesight, to sway the emotions of those on the Parole Board.
Ko Do Sik does return home, but he has no intention of caring for his brother, and Ko Doo Young isn’t interested in being cared for. The two get into constant fights, both physically and verbally, and they seem to have no intention of mending their relationship either.
Things take a turn when Ko Do Sik learns something new about himself, it’s a revelation that results in him changing in ways that are beneficial to his younger brother. From this piece of news, Ko Do Sik shows much character development, and so he uses whatever opportunity available to get his brother back into shape.
We now see the two brothers getting along with each other, the contrasting scenes show us how much misunderstandings, and unspoken words can harm a relationship. The Ko brothers are happy, and us as the audience are also happy.
Ko Do Young goes off to the Olympics with his coach, and from his new training regime, he’s able to come out on top. Ko Do Young was also made aware of the news that seemed to change his brother’s life forever.
And so, the judo player puts on the performance of his life, and in some way, he seemed to have been motivated by the brother who he had once written off. I must say that the scenes leading up to the end of the movie was well directed, and I must admit that I too shed a tear while watching.
