Hyper Knife - Ep. 5
YouTube Short Here
They're soulmates, not lovers. They'd kill for each other. They would kill each other. They hate each other, they're hopelessly devoted, they'll go down together with their hands wrapped around each other's throats, but they'll be together. They see themselves in each other. There's no one else who understands. They are the bane of each other's existence. They will likely be each other's downfall. There doesn't need to be kissing, that would ruin it at this point.
I should have known, right then and there.

"You said it yourself, Dr. Choi. We're the same, you and I. Two sides of the same coin. We can see through each other."
CHOI DEOK-HEE & JEONG SE-OK
↳ Played by Sol Kyung-gu & Park Eun-bin in HYPER KNIFE (2025)
Tension and conflict are the two keywords that best represent the themes of Hyper Knife. The story revolves around a kind of battle between Seok and Deokhee, who, because of their deep, irreconcilable rift, spend years apart until they are pulled back into each other’s lives.
—Kim Junghyun (director), Kavenyou

Se-ok and Deok-hee’s relationship is the main plot and storyline. The raw emotions they have for each other, that comes out of them when they clash – it’s indescribable. They have a really firm grip on each other’s necks and their lives depend on the other.
—Sol Kyunggu (plays Deokhee), The Straits Times
***
They are mirror images of each other in some ways, but also complete opposites. Se-ok is straightforward and relentless, while Deok-hee is more reserved and introspective. And yet, they share this unspoken bond of knowing what it means to be the best and to have that taken away.

These two characters are so deeply intertwined that they are the only ones who can truly understand and destroy each other.

There's a note in the script's first scene: 'Handel's aria "Lascia ch'io pianga" begins to play.' I asked the writer why that music plays as Se-ok walks into the OR. The writer told me, "This story is about Deok-hee making Se-ok cry.' That really moved me.

Se-ok's love for her work is so pure that it turns into pure selfishness. That's how her mind works. Having never truly owned anything, she fights tooth and nail to claim Deok-hee as "hers". Her motto is, 'My teacher is mine.' When he says he's going to die after teaching her failure, she rebels: 'You can't die without my permission. I have to protect what's mine.'

***
These characters, especially Se-ok, say harsh things even when their feelings are sincere. Both believed they were right. Our drama shows how people try to make even wrong answers feel right to them. We all want to leave a mark on someone's life. Deok-hee and Se-ok left lasting scars on each other—and maybe, that's what made them "right" for each other.
—Park Eunbin, K-entertainment News
***
Deokhee is not one to admit his faults publicly, but in the end, he does try to fulfill his initial promise of passing on all his knowledge to Seok. What is intriguing about their dynamic, though, is that they hold a figurative leash on each other's life. In this complex relationship, they feel both affection and hatred for each other.
—Sol Kyunggu, ELLE Singapore
***
I believe the ending was about both of them winning. Deok-hee is someone who's never truly failed, which is why he could never grow as a doctor. I think he wanted Se-ok to develop a desire to save, to be different from him. Both Deok-hee and Se-ok were skilled, but not "good" doctors. I interpreted Deok-hee's goal as pushing Se-ok to embrace emotions beyond just technical skill.
—Park Eunbin, K-entertainment News
***
What would Seok have become if the two had never met? EUNBIN: She probably would've died feeling incomplete. Full of an emptiness she could never fill. What if Deokhee never met Seok? KYUNGGU: He'd go on as if he were stuck on his own island. […] PARK BYUNGEUN (plays Dr. Han): If Deokhee had kept living stubbornly on his own, he never would have reflected on what his life truly was. KYUNGGU: He's someone who doesn't know how to confess, yet he does.
