Today is my birthday.

I’m in the last year of my twenties, I don’t remember how soft I used to be. I mourn for the youth that was wasted on other people. I wish I had invested more in myself than in others who drained me dry for their own capital.

I’ve learned—I hope—and I redirected myself toward myself. Every cord I cut, every bridge set ablaze, led me to this day here—a day that wouldn’t have existed otherwise.

I would have cut myself before the cord, Set myself on fire before the bridge, Let my emotions rot like cancer because I should be grateful that they even give me a chance at all.

It took me twenty-nine years to realize every hand that reached for me always exploited what I was taught to lay bare in front of everyone. Instead of covering me, they laughed at me. Spit on me. Talk about taking me behind the barn.

Everyone was surprised when I bit the hands that took from me the most. Because nobody gave me anything that they didn’t already take more than they needed from me.

I emphasize with mother snake, coiling around her territory, guarding her most valuable resources, that which are of herself.

Today is my birthday.

The gift I give is of myself to myself.
