IB Decisions: What to consider when choosing Highers and Standards

When choosing IB subjects, I’m sure we all have our dilemmas when choosing whether to take a subject as higher or standard (I definitely did) and I regretted my choice, as I didn’t have my priorities right, so I thought I’d create a list in order of most important factor to least important factor (this is subjective) to help you out in choosing! Here goes: 

1. How much do you enjoy this subject?: If you are stuck between, for example, Biology and English higher, why would you choose the one you like least? Doing a subject for higher means more lessons, therefore more content, which then means you will overall spend way more time on it. If you are going to have to dedicate yourself to a subject it might as well be a subject you really enjoy as the extra work you spend on it won’t be such a burden, it’ll be enjoyable and therefore you’ll get more out of it!

2. Do you need to take it higher for a certain uni course?: I was unsure if I should put this as second most important, but I know that for a lot of people, going to University is extremely important and the choice can hinder people’s opportunity. For example, if you want to do medicine, you have to do two sciences at higher level. However, if you don’t plan on doing a course which requires you to do certain subjects at higher level, this may be less of a priority but you may want to consider the skills certain subjects will give you if you want to go into Law, for example, doing more humanities subjects at higher level may be useful. 

3. The course structure: (This links to the first point) but Say you quite like biology, but then you realise that the topics studied at higher level are topics hate, then this could well be a factor when considering whether to take a subject at higher level. 

4. How good are you at the subject?: I chose this as one of the least important factors, as after placing it as the most important factor in choosing between two subjects, I realised that it is in fact, one of the least important. Exam results are not always the best indicator of your ability in a subject. Liking a subject more correlates with getting a better grade in the end, cause you have more interest in it and therefore will make you work harder!

How to keep up with English Lit

It’s a bit self explanatory that to do English especially at higher level you need to read A LOT. However, a lot of us find ourselves putting off reading books for other things like homework. The key is to start early and use time to your advantage.

1. When on the train or bus home whip out your book!! It can be one for class or for extra reading but it keeps the mind healthy and active and makes good use of your time.

2. Go to the library! This is a bit boring to most people but it’s so good to get an idea of things to study maybe for your Extended Essay and to read outside of lessons or for other subjects like History.

3. If you have a kindle - use it. Kindle’s a very handy because you can make notes on them and highlight and I find it so useful when I’m going back through a book and trying to find quotes as it also comes up with what people have mostly highlighted. It is also good for book recommendations and most of the books you study in school are free on there!

4. Use your holidays like half terms and extended weekends to catch up on a book you're studying or want to read as even getting ahead a little bit helps as you already know what you’re going to cover in the lesson.

5. Buy a study guide like york notes as this helps a lot with context and key themes that will be covered in exams. It gives you all the info without having to ask teachers or look it up.

6. Use online resources like essays, sparknotes, LitCharts and cliffsnotes. Even if teachers advise against them they help a lot with revision and refreshing your knowledge.

7. Use websites like education umbrella to buy school novels cheaper and related ones for extra reading for example I bought Careless People by Sarah Churchwell as it is all about The Great Gatsby and this will help me for my exams later on.

Speisman

Aim: Investigate the extent to which manipulation of cognitive appraisal of a stressful event could influence emotional experience

Method: Lab experiment. iv: music condition, dv: physiological stress response. The researchers showed a film about unpleasant genital surgery. To manipulate people's appraisal the film was shown to different groups of participants using different soundtracks. One aimed to emphasize the pain of the surgery (trauma condition), one to portray willingness and happiness (denial condition) and the other another was an anthropological interpretation (intellectualizing condition). During the viewing physiological measures were taken such as heart rate and sweat on palms. Elevation of either indicate stress.

Findings: The trauma condition had the highest physiological measures of stress. It supports the appraisal theory that the emotions of a situation are dependent on how we perceive it 

- ecological invalidity due to lab conditions 

- highly stressful for participants

Le Doux

Aim: Investigate the role of the amygdala in emotion 

Method: Lab experiment. The rats were conditioned to feel fear when hearing a bell. LeDoux lesioned the brain to find out what part of the brain made the connection between the bell and fear

Findings: When the auditory thalamus was removed the rats showed no signs of fear. The thalamus was a direct pathway to the amygdala which produces emotional response of fear. Concludes that biological damage to the brain would result in emotion difficulty

Fallacies of Argument

Fallacies of Ambiguity (errors in thinking created by confusions of language)

1. Equivocation: Use of double meanings of a word or an imprecision in its definition to blur or shift its meaning. "He claims to be a conservative, yet he spend lavishly"

2. Amphiboly: Confusion in argument created by unclear sentence structure, such as results from dangling or misplaces modifiers. "Charles wounded the burglar with a gun"

3. Jargon: Use of technical terms or in-group language in an inappropriate context to confuse the issue and possibly to dazzle or stun the audience into acceptance 

Fallacies of Relevance (errors in thinking created by bringing in ideas or emotions which are not relevant to the argument)

4. Ad hominem: (against the man) Shifting an argument based on reason to an attack on the arguer. " You can't believe him. He's been in prison"

5. Ad verecundiam: (appeal to authority) accepting an argument not on its own merit but because of the status of the person putting it forward 

6. Ad populam: (appeal to gallery) attempting to win the popular assent to a conclusion by arousing the emotions and enthusiams of the multitude. Usually containing bandwagon appeal. "1000 housewives can't be wrong"

7. Ad baculum: (appeal to force) arguing that a statement is true because the opporient will be harmed if he or she does not assent to it. "If you don't buy our product, your competitor will get ahead of you and cut you out of the market."

8. Ad misericordlam: (appeal to pity) arguing for the truth of the statement because someone would suffer if it were false

Fallacies of Logic

9. Hasty generalization: generalizing from unrepresentative or insufficient cases 

10. Ad ignorantum: (argument from ignorance) Arguing that a statement is true because there is no evidence which shows it to be false and visa versa 

11. Argument in a circle: using as a conclusion material that has already been assumed in one of its premises 

A: "You've got to do what I say because I'm in charge"

B: "How do I know that you're in charge?" 

A: "Because everyone has got to do what I say."

12. False dilemma: presenting only extremes "He is either a hero or a villain"

11. To what extent do cognitive and biological factors interact in emotion (for example, two factor theory, arousal theory, Lazarus’ theory of appraisal)?

Stress and Cognitive factors

Lazarus' theory of appraisal:  Theory that connects the cognitive process of appraisal to the biological and emotional factor of stress. Appraisal refers to an evaluation of a situation's potential impact on one's personal well-being. This theory suggests that peoples' stress can be moderated by how someone appraises a threat and their ability to deal with the threat.

Speisman et al. 

This study supports Lazarus' theory; it suggests that it is not the events themselves that elicit emotional stress, but rather the individual's interpretation or appraisal of those events. Thus the process of cognitive appraisal influences emotional reactions.
