The Velvets, Iggy and Bowie walk into The Factory
My favorite session at the IBS Conference was the History of Punk Rock by famed music journalist Legs McNeil who co-wrote Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk Rock, his co-author, Gillian McCain joined us via Skype. McNeil was pure punk rock with his wild hair, face covered with dark sunglasses, pointed black boots and the mouth of a 60s musician.
When a young woman told McNeil that she was an extra on the HBO show Vinyl (that ripped off him and his book) and that she thought it was a good program he got upset. She continued to talk over him but he refused to entertain her and instead gave the rest of the room a show, yelling at her to “shut the fuck up” and that “one more word and [he was] going to call security.”
McNeil told stories of Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, The Factory, Patti Smith, The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed. It was amazing hearing first hand stories of musicians that revolutionized an era. He shared stories of getting blazingly stoned with Patti Smith, David Bowie stealing his suicide record (so he stole the hubcaps from Bowie’s limo), and time spent with The Ramones and Richard Hell
The best part was getting to meet McNeil and having him sign a copy of Please Kill Me, I can’t wait to read it and get more gritty, drug induced, punk rock stories.

Wake Radio goes to NYC
Four members of our executive board traveled to New York City this week to soak up radio knowledge at the 76th Annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference. We had two full days of radio sessions, between the four of us we attended about 20 workshops, whoa. Now we are inspired, full of ideas and ready to revolutionize our station and Make Wake Radio Great Again. Viva la revolución! (Buck, our resident Spanish speaker, can translate this for you if needed)
Keep an eye on our Tumblr for blogs, photos, and outtakes from the trip, it was a crazy ride that you won’t wanna miss hearing about.
