The London Canal Museum
The name of this this museum is something of a misnomer, as it is neither concerned with the history of just canals in London, nor is it just concerned with the history of canals – those these are, of course, the main topic of the exhibits.
The museum, located next to Battlebridge Basin off the Regent’s Canal, is split across two floors, with the recommended route beginning on the ground floor with the history of canals in the UK, detailing their construction and the spread of the network across the country.
The visitor then gets to experience the cramped conditions of (half) a reconstructed narrowboat, the Coronis, its furnishings decorated with traditional ‘roses and castles’ artwork. Besides the boat sits a canal towing tractor, which were widely used in London in the 1950s and 60s to pull barges along.
Smaller displays detail further aspects of canal life, including an overview of the handling of the cargo that the narrowboats used to carry along the waterways. This leads into what is probably the main attraction of the museum – the huge ice well in the middle of the floor. The building the museum is housed in was once the ice warehouse of the ice cream magnate Carlo Gatti, and the wells held ice imported from Norway, which was brought to the Regent’s Canal Dock (Limehouse Basin), and then along the Regent’s Canal to the warehouse. Naturally, there is a display on the ice trade and the production of ice cream!
Upstairs, the visitor may be forgiven for temporarily believing they are in a museum now dedicated to horses, given the recreation of a stable stall (complete with model horse), and the presence of a ramp that the horses used to reach the first floor. All become clear when one learns that the horses that pulled Gatti’s ice carts were once stabled there! The rest of the floor is largely dedicated to a reasonably through history of London’s canals, though those who do not wish to do much reading will also find interactive exhibits on locks and boat types, plus a chance to sit and watch archive films on canal life.
