So, like, the Viking "Sunstone" is basically an ancient, high-tech polarized filter made of Iceland Spar (calcite... super cool rock, btw). Because calcite is birefringent, it splits incoming light into two separate beams that are polarized in different directions. Even when it’s foggy or overcast, the sky has a specific polarization pattern centered on the sun; by rotating the crystal until the two beams match in brightness, you’re essentially "locking on" to the sun's hidden coordinates. It’s a brilliant bit of natural geophysics that turned a translucent rock into a precision navigation tool.

Beyond the physics, this discovery is a huge win for the validity of oral history. For decades, a Western-centric academic bias often dismissed achievements like the Norse sunstones, the incredible celestial navigation of the Polynesians, and the builders of Great Zimbabwe as mere myths, assuming these cultures weren't "sophisticated" enough to solve complex problems without modern instruments. The 2013 discovery of a calcite crystal in an Elizabethan-era shipwreck finally proved that these "legends" were actually grounded in high-level geophysics. It’s a perfect reminder that when we dismiss the "magic" of the past because it doesn't look like modern technology, we’re usually just admitting our own racism and failure to understand the brilliance of the "old ways." Mabon blessings everyone! I've finally got round to making a few more Viking sunstones reportedly used by Norse explorers to locate the sun on cloudy days while traversing the sea to new lands. Sunstones also known as Iceland Spar where they are often found, are a type of calcite that naturally form parallelepiped shapes. This creates birefringence which when aimed at a light source with no determinable position can allow the viewer to locate it and thus navigate. The recovery of an Iceland spar sunstone from a ship of the Elizabethan era that sank in 1592 off Alderney suggests that this navigational technology may have persisted after the invention of the magnetic compass.
