Puddling swallowtails at Ichetucknee. These butterflies are males who are “puddling”. When they puddle they drink up minerals that have dissolved in water. The males gives his minerals to the female during mating. Later on, the female will use those minerals in egg production. The two species seen here are Eastern Tiger Swallowtails and Palamedes Swallowtails, but we saw 12-15 individuals at once and 3-5 different species in the hour we huge out here. Cypress loved the butterflies and went from quiet observation to excited dancing.

A lush aquatic forest.

I’ve been impressed with the amount of vegetation around head spring of the Ichetucknee. It is no where near the vegetation that would be there without constant human activity, but it is still a wonderful to see it there.
