Nobel Laureate to give keynote address at Virginia Tech
Dr. Steven Chu will deliver a keynote address titled "How to Create a Bell Labs 2.0 in Today's Realities" on Friday, Oct. 11, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., in Burruss Hall Auditorium.
Chu is the co-recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics (1997) and served as U.S. Secretary of Energy under President Barack Obama from January 2009 to April 2013. He recently returned to Stanford University as the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Physics and Professor of Molecular and Cellular Physiology.
Friday's event is made possible through a generous endowment established by Hugh and Ethel Kelly. Hugh Kelly earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Tech in 1937 and 1938, respectively. He worked at AT&T's Bell Labs during World War II and was in charge of developing the Trans Atlantic Cable.
Earlier this year, Virginia Tech renamed the headquarters building of its Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) in honor of Hugh and Ethel Kelly in recognition of his pioneering work in telecommunications and her extraordinary philanthropic support.
