Scrawl #5
Trying very hard to believe in myself! So few things seem to help, but I feel lucky and grateful that I am still enjoying the art I make and that I'm starting to feel more easily motivated to work on art and schoolwork!
Forever hoping for the best,

New term is beginning at school.
Already tired, but also excited to feel like I have a bit of a fresh start.
I'm really excited for my Relief and Monoprint class, but scared for my research methods.
Hopefully all goes well!
(Gotta at least TRY to stay optimistic lol)

Dolores, oil on canvas, Z.H.L., 2 x 3 ft., 2019.
This is a portrait of my grandma at 17 years old, pregnant with my mom, on her first wedding day. At the time I painted this, it was nearing the 2-year anniversary of her passing.
I have been told by many people in my family that I look exactly like my grandma did when she was young, so in a way, I like to think that this is a sort of three generation portrait -- it's my grandma pregnant with my mom, but it's also me finding myself and connection to my grandma through this painting.

These are preparatory drawings for a painting I completed soon after. Finished product will be posted at some point.
Ritual (in the style of Cindy Sherman), Z.H.L., digital photography, 2020.
How do we build an identity? What does it mean to find comfort in the construction of a new face?
In response to Sherman's Untitled Film Stills, this work explores gender as performance and ritual, specifically questioning this in terms of womanhood and femininity. What does it mean to be a woman? What are the rituals and actions we do everyday that demonstrate or oppose our identities?
