Happy Ides of March.
My Dad drove 2.5 hours to fix my car battery terminals (it involved wire stripping so a bit out of my league) and shoot the shit for a couple hours. It was awesome.
May every queer person on this planet find an adult, family or otherwise, who makes you feel safe and seen and loved the way Mark does for me. They don't always have to understand you (my dad still has a tough time saying "queer" cause he graduated high school in the mid 80s, but he loves my gf all the same) and they may never fully "get it" (he doesn't know why I'd like top surgery but he wholeheartedly supports my decision), but in the long run it doesn't really matter. Unconditional love and support are flexible and full of accommodation.
May you all find a Mark.
Listen, I know we love the Ides of March on this webbed site.
BUT!! March 15th is also my kickass Dad's birthday. He's one of the few parents who knows and proves what "unconditional" love should look like, and the best part? His name is MARK!
So if you would like to be super cool and amazing, please send me an Ides of Mark meme. He will lose his mind.
My Dad should be crowned the King of Tumblr and here's why:
1. Accepting as fuck. I have come out as queer, genderfluid, and polyamorous all on separate occasions and his response every time has been: "That's nice peanut, but please remember that getting caught having sex in your car is a felony!" Even though that has never once been an issue.
2. Autisic. If you play the first .2 seconds of any rock song from '80-'95 he can give you the band, album title, release date, and what he was wearing when he heard it the first time. He has trained all his children to do this as well.
3. Genuinely invested in his kids. I have been to more concerts WITH my dad than without. He bought the entire OG Criterion Godzilla movie collection for my youngest brother when they became a hyperfixation. He taught both my middle brothers how to fix cars and built a knife forge with our German exchange brother last year. Just for fun and because he could.
He's the kind of parent who randomly texts me when my favorite song played on the radio or when he saw something that would make me laugh. This is what conversations with him look like:
4. His name is Mark and his birthday is 3/15. It's the Ides of Mark. It's a pun ON an established Tumblr holiday.
Would you vote him King of Tumblr based on these facts?
Yes, all hail.
No.
HAPPY IDES OF MARK TO MY DAD!!!
Happy Birthday and a wonderful Ides of Mark to my incredible Dad. I hope every queer/ND person finds an adult in life who makes them feel as loved and accepted as Mark does for me. If you're done stabbing a Roman Senator and have the time, grab some Funyuns and listen to Operation Mindcrime in his honor today. 💚
(Also what an icon??? I need some Ocean Pacifics wtf 1986 Men's Fashion?!)
Happy Ides of Mark to my super dope Dad.
Happy Birthday to the parent who has shown me truly unconditional love every day. Thanks for being so cool that we made it into an ancient Buzzfeed "Cute Coming Out Stories" article in 2015. Thank you for introducing me to Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" and the entire discography of Judas Priest and the Cars growing up. Thank you for always supporting me, trusting me, and for being my concert buddy (can't wait for Queensrÿche next month). Thanks for handing me a walkie-talkie and a bike and letting me develop my own sense of responsibility.
Thank you for generally kicking ass. I love you, Skipper.
