birthday cake

Danny’s worst birthday had been his sixth. His family was on its way back to Korea after an extended trip to visit his father’s relatives in the United States. The whole trip home was a disaster. There were missed canceled flights, missed connections and a massive snow storm that kept the whole family, (mom, dad and three very cranky young children) trapped in an airport overnight. By the time they made it home, it wasn’t even Danny’s birthday anymore. It was, in his mind, the worst possible birthday anyone could ever have. This idea was solidly trashed fifteen years later when Danny turned twenty-one.
Ever since New Years, Danny had more or less been kept under house arrest by his manager. He was only allowed out for 1nferno schedules and always promptly returned when they were over. The other members were given strict instructions to keep a close eye on their wayward group mate. The only thing missing was an ankle monitor. Unfortunately for Danny, MSG didn’t seem to allow for furloughs, even on birthdays.
He was allowed have a birthday vlive with his group members, but Danny had been told, in no uncertain terms, that he was not to leave the 1nferno dorms. His father, who never liked Danny’s career choices to begin with, did not take Danny’s refusal of his birthday dinner invitation well. He rejected Danny’s suggestion that the whole family come to his dorm and eat around the cramped kitchen table. Danny tried to explain, but there was no good way to tell his dad that he’d been caught sleeping with another idol and was being punished for his indiscretion. In the end, Danny’s dad hung up on him and none of the Scott-Moons were permitted to visit him. At least not until he “came to his senses” and apologized in person. Which, if his manager had anything to say about it, would be a very long time.
Instead of celebrations and gifts and time with his family, Danny was left moping on the couch, watching reruns of old dramas. When his phone vibrated with a notification, Danny almost didn’t look at it. The birthday wishes he’d been getting all day were thoughtful, but ultimately served as a reminder of how much he’d messed up. Still, he didn’t have it in him to be rude and ignore the sms. Begrudgingly, he picked up his phone and opened his messages app. The most recent message was from Minyoung.
Danny’s lips parted slightly, his brow furrowed. He didn’t understand. He thought Minyoung would never want to talk to him again after he very blatant “blind” items about the pair of them, which only added to Danny’s newfound bad boy reputation. Not that he was upset by the message. On the contrary, Danny was pleased to know that she didn’t completely hate him. Maybe their friendship could be salvaged after all. Without entirely reading her message, Danny fired off a text of his own.
‘thanks for the birthday wishes 😊’
