Hey there! Our idiom of the day is ”Carrot and stick,” which means “reward and punishment.”⠀ This term alludes to enticing a horse or donkey to move by dangling a carrot before it and, either alternately or at the same time, urging it forward by beating it with a stick. Burning the Midnight Oil
It happens just the same each night,
as time forgets to breathe,
and the cuckoo screams upon the wall,
twelve hollow, ritualed chimes of doom.
The air grows thick and the walls perspire,
my brow beaded over in sweat,
my breaths cut short, as though a hand
be clenched about my throat.
Thus in the darkness of the smothering night,
I awake the amber glow,
of the bitter-scented oil lamp,
which alives my throat and lungs.
Something in the bones of night,
between the striking of the clock,
reaches into my sleeping spirit,
and clutches with a vicious fist.
Each eve I swear will be my last:
the night the grasp outmatches my waking,
denying me the candle’s glow
before the final midnight bell.
Yet when the clock begins its knell,
and death again, calls out my name,
in sibilant curses, twelve times decreed,
I strike the flint to faithful steel.
And so, the flame burns with life,
its riposte cleaving the stifling air,
shimmering upon the ghastly ooze
of dreams dabbled, soaked in sweat.
Shadows scamper off to corners,
peering out in furtive flickers,
straining against the quivering flame,
yet confined by the burning of the midnight oil.
It happens just the same each night,
my fingers slick with lacquered sweat,
as something stirs beyond the flame,
and I can only dread the hour
the midnight chime drones on…
For should the burning oil be unlit,
my life be seized by an undead grip.
