Scene from tonight’s practice session for the #igdovetailchallenge We’ll call this set number 3 ever, first full practice pair in 1/4” poplar. Separately, the tails look pretty good, the pins look ok and then it goes down hill when they come together. My DIY jig isn’t exactly perfect so I’m hoping that’s what is throwing off my angles on the pins. You can see pretty clearly the sides of the center pin are not even and that translates to a gappy joint, which is frustrating because I was really careful with marking and sawing, so I’m not sure where I went wrong I xcept for the jig. My real Katz-Moses jig is on its way, so hopefully next week round 4 will look better. I need to practice on some chunkier wood too. The 1/4” is the scrap I’ve got, so that’s what I’m using, but I should be practicing on 1/2” which is what the project will be made from. On the up side, the poplar was actually really nice to work with. Hard enough to catch the edge of my chisel and cut nice and clean, but soft enough to not be too frustrating. At last! Here is my submission for the #igdovetailchallenge ! This is my live-edge cherry and spalted silver maple whiskey shelf. The cherry is from my uncle's house around the corner in NJ and the maple is from my parent's house in Pittsburgh. Lots of firsts on this project, but to name a few: first finished fine woodworking piece with traditional hand-cut joinery, first multi species piece, and (I think) first fine woodworking piece created from lumber that I harvested and milled myself. There were a few power tools mixed to the process during milling and dimensioning, but the dovetail joinery was all cut by hand. Tonight I started by doing a full resharpening of 3 of my most used chisels. Then I went ahead and chiseled out the second set of pins and tested the fit. No mistakes and again, nice and tight. 👌🏻 Then I cut the 3rd and 4th sets of pins and coped out the waste. I got a little more daring with the coping saw and got way closer to the scored line this time. The idea is that closer coping means less chiseling, which means less sharpening, which means more work gets done in my hour of hand-cut zen woodworking. Tomorrow I’ll finish off the final chiseling and the red oak practice project will be complete. Then it’s on to the real-deal in cherry. Ive never done a #motivationmonday post but I feel like I owe @bikecitywoodworks and @mf_woodbutcher some thanks and a shout out for putting together the #igdovetailchallenge. I’m still in practice mode at the moment, but it’s been a pleasure to scroll through some of the incredible work being done within that hashtag. Epoxy pours and CNC’s are cool, but to me, there’s no woodworking quite as pure as traditional, hand cut joinery.
