Cut one set of pins tonight in the red oak practice project. Only took about an hour but that’s all I have in me for today. It takes a lot of focus and a lot of sharpening to stay on the score line and keep everything square. One of the things that helped tonight were a new fine tooth blade in the coping saw. The old one had been in there since I coped the trim in our old house back in 2007 😬 probably due for a new one. Then on the first pin waste area, I just went to town chopping out with a 3/4” chisel vertically. Or so I thought. It was very challenging to keep it at 90° and I couldn’t really tell when I was through. Upon inspection, the chisel angle changed and I undercut the scored line in the other end by about a millimeter. Not the end of the world, but the first big mistake I made on this project. 🤬 After that, I switched positions, put the wood back in the vise (resharpened the chisel) and went at it horizontally shaving off half a hair each time. This way I could see where both scored lines were and control the cut better. Results between the two methods are clearly visible in the 4th pic. The top is way under cut compared to the second two. The blue tape is super helpful too. I’ve been taping and marking with an exacto knife since my butterfly marking knife is right side only and I don’t trust myself backhand. The result is the clearly visible taped “do not cut this off” area. If you cut right up to the tape, it’s a super tight fit. So far, I’m very pleased with how this is going. 3 more to go, then some rabbeting.... somehow. But that’s not part of the challenge, so it may wait. . . . . . , . . . . . . . . . . #wood #woodwork #woodworker #woodworking #finewoodworking #maker #oak #redoak #handmade #workshop #tools #toolstorage #pegboard #cabinets #handcrafted #maker #diy #doityourself #chisel #fancy #rustic #display #thejawnshop #dovetail #dovetails #box #traditionaljoinery #igdovetailchallenge (at New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoKyjr_AUVB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=zxzbaheumyiz
