IIH Vocab 101 Learn the lingo with our series of common acronyms and abbreviations used when we talk about IIH. PTC Pseudotumor cerebri, also known as idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) or benign intracranial hypertension (BIH), is a disorder characterised by raised intracranial pressure (ICP) without intracranial abnormalities. Medical speak aside, this means that there is too much pressure in the head of someone with IIH, and doctors do not know why. IIH is a rare disease affecting between 1 to 2 people out of 100 000. Medical literature lists obese women of child bearing age as those who have the greater risk of developing IIH. But anyone can develop it, including males, children or people who are within or below a healthy BMI range. Symptoms include: Persistent headache, nausea and vomiting, temporary vision loss or greying out, decrease in visual acuity or even blindness, papilloedema, tunnel vision double vision and visual field deficits, 6th nerve palsy, neck, back and radicular pain, low frequency hearing loss, vertigo, an impaired sense of smell, fatigue, mood disturbances, pulsatile tinnitus, tinnitus and cognitive dysfunction more commonly known as brain fog. Brain fog is different for everyone but can include forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, getting lost easily, being slower to think and feeling confused. Not everyone with these symptoms will have IIH, and not everyone with IIH will experience all of these symptoms. #iihvocab #iihbrainstrust #iihacronyms #iihabbreviations #spoonielanguage #intracranialhypertension #ptc #bih #spoonie #iihwarrior #pseudotumorcerebri
