ROBIN HOBB’S REALM OF THE ELDERLINGS >> The Tawny Man Trilogy cast of characters [Farseer Set] + [Fitz and the Fool Set] + [Fitz Set] + [Fool Set] <- full saga spoilers in these!
ROTE Springfest during the Trojan War
Happy Springfest beloveds! For @springfest-rote, I have been paired with the wonderful @impiousgherkin to create a Trojan War ROTE fanwork! Raph created FOUR phenomenal works of art in three different styles, enthusiastically supported the writing of all the scenes we thought of (nine or so scenes and 11.3k words), and encouraged a darker fic overall.
Like ROTE, the Iliad is focused on the struggle between fate and free will, the social obligation of kings to protect their people, the strong emotions of an unreliable narrator, and the relationship between this heroic fighter and his social-justice-oriented not-a-fighter soulmate.
There will be exhaustion, blood, and gore. There will be death. There will be a Trojan Dragon.
Check out The Ballad of Beloved. Summary;
“Pelides,” they cheered for me. Peleus’s son. “Aristos Achaion,” they screamed, best of the Achaeans, best of the Greeks. Sometimes, they chanted the name my parents gave me, “Achilleos.” In the cacophony of voices, it shortened and blurred, their impatient tongues gliding the vowels together. Even if they had slowed their speech, it would not have been my name, for I had been granted a truer one over a decade ago, when my mouth first graced his in the rocky meadow by Chiron’s cave.
A retelling of the Iliad where Fitz is Achilles and Beloved is Patroclus. The war has raged on this beach for ten years with no sign of ending. Contains references (and spoilers) to the Farseer trilogy and Tawny Man trilogy.
The Piebalds are way more interesting than appears at first because at first they seem like a warning story: don't police your own group, don't resort to violence, don't live in the past. All consistent with Fitz's personal story.
But then we find out that the Piebalds are a puppet group bribed and manipulated by the Pale Woman. A false White Prophet that surrounds herself with white, talks about how Beloved is impure because of his skin, is a product of a eugenics breeding program, and has massive wealth and resources.
So we have an extremist minority group being commanded by a literal White (prophet) supremacist. Which happens in real life. I think it's such a unique and interesting take on an old formula.
Can Robin Hobb stop creating evil fucking people that make me want to throw the books out of a window, please?
Three paintings for Realm of the Elderlings events. The first one was a winterfest gift for apelicandaughter on AO3, the second for the ROTE villains and the third one is another winterfest gift for @alloysius-g
The pale woman plot line in Fool's Fate is so unintentionally funny to me.
When she does her little strip tease for Fitz (and Beloved), her sole strategy is to weaponize Fitz's alleged desire to procreate with his bestie. I mean, HUH?? AND IT ALMOST WORKS. She's like, "I look exactly like your bff, but I have big boobies and you can have babies with me". This man has to restrain himself from going through with it.
Turns out that the joke is on all parties involved, because, biology be damned, Fitz and Beloved make their own baby anyway.
