Warrior Penelope meets Mulan???

Okay so I had this idea after binging Warrior Penelope au’s and having a conversation with a friend.
The basic “plot” is before(or around the same time of) Helen’s abduction and the gathering of kings, where Odysseus gets terribly injured;
[I’m not sure what kind of injury I want him to have yet, one that physically detriments his strength for good, or one that just took a little longer to heal. But I’m still working out a few tweaks—]
And while Odysseus is struggling to walk even with a cane, Menelaus and Agamemnon are gathering kings and warriors to fight Troy. Penelope (being the amazing and dashing women she is) worries that Odysseus might be forced to battle because of his oath, and even though she knows Odysseus is strong and has Athena’s will, Odysseus is still terribly injured and he will most likely die when fighting.
So Penelope goes behind her husband’s back (because I don’t think he’d agree to sending his love to war) and makes a deal with Athena. Penelope claims she’ll become Athena’s other champion, honor her and do whatever it takes for Athena to agree so she can take her husband’s place in the war. Athena agrees with Penelope’s terms, due to having a soft spot for the Ithaca family and wishing for more women to become warriors (I KNOW that’s probably not lore accurate but it’s my story now and I do what I want). Athena lends Penelope a gift, a metal that will allow Penelope to take the form of a man so she is accepted and listened too by the other generals.
[Penelope’s role would be kept secret by most of the world, but I do believe there would be a decent amount of exceptions: mainly the kingdom of Ithaca, now this might be risky but I do think the people of Ithaca respect both their king and queen enough to accept whatever chaos they cause.]
Eventually, Odysseus would find out Penelope and Athena’s plan and while heartbroken, fearful, and a little betrayed, he accepts his wife’s terms. But he does make her promise that no matter what happens she WILL come home alive or he’s going to the underworld and dragging her o—
Anyways! That’s all I came up with right now. I’m still working out the other stuff lol. Hope whoever read all these mad ramblings enjoyed them!!
