Is cheesecake a cake?

A chocolate cake means it’s a chocolate flavored cake. But a cheesecake is not a cheese flavored cake. So why is it called a cheesecake? And why for every other cakes it’s always *flavor* (Space) cake but for cheesecake there is no space?
