You try to stay busy. Try to keep your mind off the reality of what’s in front of you.

It’s difficult when everything you see reminds you of the person you’ve lost.

You’re in the middle of washing the dishes used at the service you’d helped put together, but you haven’t moved since you’d pulled a certain mug from the water.

Your heart aches as the memories, frozen in time and unraveled by the touch of your hand, come barreling to the forefront of your mind.

“Jagi?”

You suck air in through your teeth and drop the mug, soapy water splashing up against the sides of the sink. You wipe at your eyes with your arm, then blink and clear your throat. “Mhm?”

There’s silence, the kind that’s weighted and full of the things left unsaid. You feel yourself tense in anticipation of what’s to come.

“I’m okay,” you dismiss before Yoongi can ask, but his silence remains.

You don’t even realize he’s moved to stand beside you until he’s leaning forward to get a good look at you.

“I know you’re not,” he mutters.

You let out a stuttering breath. You should have known he’d see right through you. You swallow hard and stare down at the bubbles coating your rubber gloves. Your sinuses burn in a familiar way, warning of the oncoming tears you’d been trying so hard to hold back and ignore. “I have to be.”

Yoongi lets out a quiet breath, reaching forward to gently remove the gloves from your hands. He drapes them carefully across the faucet, then reaches for your hands again. His fingers gently skate along yours, as if rubbing feeling back into them even though the water had been warm. He stares at you for a long time, his mouth a thin line. “You don’t have to be anything.”

The breath whooshes from your lungs, as if it had been waiting for approval to be released, and your eyes prick with tears that surface faster than you can stop them. You shake your head. “I’m not okay, Yoon.”

“Shh,” he soothes, pulling you in for a hug you hadn’t realized you’d needed. He holds you tightly, stronger and more sturdy than you’re used to, and you know he’s feeling your emotions with you when his chest stutters. “I know you’re not. It’s okay.”

“It hurts,” you whimper, burying your face against him and clinging to him a little tighter. As if you’re afraid he’ll leave too.

“I know,” his voice is thick with emotion and he clears his throat while he rubs your back. “Do you know why it hurts so much?”

“Because I love them.”

“Right,” he confirms. “A broken heart only comes from loving someone and caring so much. You love them so much, jagi. Don’t you realize how lucky they are to have had that?”

You sniffle. “I was more lucky to be able to love them.”

He hums, squeezing you a little tighter. “Maybe that’s true, but with that strong love comes strong pain. You have to make room for both. You have to feel both.”

You can’t stop once you start, the sobs wracking your frame as he holds you through it, in the middle of the kitchen with the familiar mug floating to the surface in the sink. Your entire body aches – your chest, your head, your stomach. You carry your pain in so many places, you can’t help but think that the love you felt and still feel must be so strong.

You feel it all and, while a part of you hates it, a part of you is relieved to finally release the pent-up emotions. To finally take it off your shoulders and lay it down at your feet.

When you’ve finally calmed down, Yoongi cups your face in his hands and you’re surprised to see tears on his own face when you open your eyes. He wipes his thumbs across your face and then presses a kiss to your temple, right where a headache is starting to form. “Good, jagi.”

You sniffle, cringing a little at the messiness of your tears. “What if I lose more people, Yoon? I don’t want to go through this again.”

He smiles sadly. “You will. It’s a part of life, but you know what they say about a life full of love?”

You shake your head, closing your eyes as more tears surface.

He brushes them away. “It’s a life that’s been well-lived.”

Your bottom lip trembles and you can’t stop yourself from crying again, collapsing against his chest. He holds you through it, just like he had before and just like he’ll continue to do. Because as much as it hurts to lose someone, you can’t bear the thought of never having had them around in the first place. So, you’ll continue to live your life and love with your entire heart because to feel arms like this around you, to be surrounded by people you love and care about…it’s worth it.

You can’t imagine a life without having loved at all.

So, you’ll continue to live, just like the ones you’ve lost would want you to. You’ll continue to love, so that when it’s time to say goodbye, people will know without a doubt they’ve lived a life full of love.

And while this pain is fresh and something that may never fully heal, you know it’s just a symbol of how much you loved them. And that love will always be with you, carried in your heart for the days you need to remember just how much love you’ve had in your life.

“I love you, Yoongi,” you mutter quietly through a hiccup and fading tears.

His breath is steady, chest and arms sturdy as they hold you, and you’re reminded in that moment how beautiful love can be. “I love you, jagi. You’re going to be okay.”

You realize he’s right. One day...someday...you’ll be okay.
