it doesn’t get talked about enough how Ilya is insecure. not necessarily in a bad way but here he is with his broken English, his fucked up family, with his accent, with being the complete opposite of Shane who sees as being perfect and exactly what the NHL wants. Ilya looks at Shane at being perfection, everything he doesn’t feel like he is. Shane can speak perfect English and French. Shane has a supportive family. he is literally the golden player the NHL is needing. I don’t think Ilya is jealous of Shane, but I think he’s envious of what Shane has and what he doesn’t have. it goes to show that even if you think someone is perfect, that’s just what their image is showing. you don’t actually know what is inside their heart, head, and mind. Shane doesn’t feel perfect. he sees Ilya as cocky, arrogant, and smooth. he has a lively accent and Ilya immediately takes up the whole room. Ilya is lively and fun in a way that Shane feels he isn’t. these two are being shown as perfect or at least flawed beautifully to each other without saying the quiet struggles and feelings and emotions they have out loudly to each other
