I rewatched that episode years ago and sent an anon to a Merlin blog like “Arthur was born and died in the arms of the person who loved him most on that earth” like I’m not normal about it in the slightest

EXACTLY THANK YOU! Also the Ygraine/Merlin parallels are always so chef's kiss because 1) As you said, Arthur’s life begins and ends held by the same kind of love, it just wears different faces. Ygraine gives him life through magic, Merlin keeps him alive through magic, and then Arthur literally entrusts merlin with ygraine’s sigil like. hello?? that is his mother’s symbol, and he gives it to the person he loves most/who has been protecting him since the beginning. (Even though he doesnt know the full extent of it yet)

2) and the Ygraine / Balinor lines??? “you were born of magic” / “you are magic itself” Arthur and Merlin are both children of magic, just on opposite sides of the narrative. Arthur is magic’s consequence, Merlin is magic’s embodiment. One is born because of it, the other is born as it. Parallel lives, parallel destinies.

3) Ygraine saying she would have given her life willingly for Arthur , and Merlin saying he was born to serve Arthur and wouldn’t change a thing, both choosing sacrifice without regret. Ygraine is proud to be his mother even in death, and Merlin is proud of the life he chose beside Arthur. Also both of them frame their loss as worth it if Arthur lives the life he’s meant to. I'm sick.

6) Also, Arthur knowing his mother was kind and loving, and MAYBE seeing that reflected in Merlin . Gentleness, moral clarity, stubborn goodness. Merlin becomes the living proof that the love that created him was real. like Arthur spends his life grieving a woman he never met, and somehow finds her again in the person who walks beside him every day.
