Combining accessibility?

Okay so we all agree image captions are great. I saw a wonderful post that explained how your image captions should be concise and not describe every detail of the image because the point is to convey the main ideas. For example, if it’s an identifiable character, just say their name and don’t describe every aspect of their outfit or the background.

Could we also work into this... paragraph breaks?

I’ve seen some image descriptions that were just one solid block of text dozens of lines long. One, I can’t imagine that was helpful to listen to. Two, for legibility for those who can visually read, it was a fucking nightmare.

So maybe we should remember to put in paragraph breaks in our image captions and keep them concise?

My Advice on Adding Image Captions as a Sighted Spoonie

So I have multiple disabilities, and I often don't have the spoons to spare to caption images, but here are some pieces of advice I've figured out which allow me to use my spoons wisely while still helping. I'm hoping this will help y'all save some time and energy while still making the world a more accessible place for our visually impaired friends!

1. For large amounts of text, save the image and use google translate's "camera" feature. This has actually made it SO MUCH EASIER for me to caption text. At least on my phone, you can import a photo and it will let you pull the text from the image. You can copy+paste it from there. If anyone's confused about how to do this, feel free to DM me! Then you can just edit out any mistakes instead of having to type out the whole thing.

2. You don't have to explain every little detail of the image. This is one that I struggle with sometimes, but I'm getting better about it. You don't have to say what colour the lamp shade on the bedside table is. Often, you don't even need to explain what clothes the person in the image is wearing, unless it's important to the context. Unnecessarily complicated captions can be frustrating, so keep it to the important details!

That's all I have, but feel free to add more! This is a really important topic so I hope you all can contribute your own tips! I want to get better at this as well, but these 2 little things can go a LONG way to making it so that I can caption 5 to 6 photos instead of 0 to 2.
