Arvin Bautista Sketches 2017 74/100: Voodoo Redo It took me 74 sketches to finally forget to actually turn the screen recording on. Oh well, the video has actually been a chokepoint throughout this process since it adds a barrier of rendering/exporting/uploading to YouTube that doubles the working time involved in each sketch. Anyway, here's another redo as I wind down the 100 sketches, of one of my most frustrating early sketches. This looks better! I wish I had some time to tighten up the linework from rough pencils, but at least this keeps the energy of the piece up. #ImageComics #ImageDay Being a fan of many of the most popular artists in the 90's, I (along with just about everyone else who was into comics at the time) naturally followed several of them, when they left Marvel, and DC Comics, to form Image Comics in 1992! I bought and read so many Image books over the years, but I was a huge fan of Homage Studios/Wildstorm in particular at the start (Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio, and Scott Williams were my fave artists from back on their X-Men /X-Factor days). I really wanted to work at that studio. While I got close to making that happen (I got a call back from Jim around 1998), it never eventuated. I was however, also in contact with Whilce at the time (who had gone on to set up a class and his own studio in the Philippines), and in 1999 I flew to Manila, to train under Whilce for 2.5 months. That ended up being the best artistic learning experience I've ever had, and towards the end of my stay there, Whilce forwarded on my samples to his partner at Avalon Studios, @brianhaberlinofficial. When I got back to Australia, they offered me my first comics gig, "Aria: The Soul Market", which was published by Image in 2000 (although my first published work was actually another one of their books, a fill in on "The Wicked: Medusa's Tale"). I later went on to do more work for Brian on Stan Winston's "Realm of the Claw" (that's a page from issue 2 pictured). That mini-series ended up being my last published work at Image before I ended up at Marvel and DC (a shame it's no longer in print). Anyway, I still read some @imagecomics books to this day, and it's great to see them still going strong 25 years later! I'm glad I got to contribute a little of my work to them over that time. Hopefully I can come back, and do some creator owned work through Image in the near future! Here's to 25 more! P. s. I really wanna get better at drawing hair, especially women's hair. I'd watched some promising tutorials online, but then I tried it, and, uh, I'll get better I promise.

Incidentally, I drew #Voodoo from #JimLee's #Wildcats, in honor of #ImageDay. I have never drawn Voodoo before, and I have no idea what her powers are (Voodoo powers I'd imagine), but Wildcats was the very first Image Comic I came upon, JUST as I was getting into Jim Lee's X-Men run.
