When I'm writing a slow burn romance and it is in fact burning slowly:
WIP INTRO: LOST TIDES
ONE for the fang of the Leviathan of the Ancient Years, weapon of the Gods’ own pride. TWO for a drop of blood from the tamed Wolf-Deer whom in the West Country the Gods did hide. THREE for the corked and bottled tears of Senaru’s would-be bride. FOUR for what the mortal-child holds dear. FIVE for all that was lost to the Tides.
Blurb: For decades, the Vashiki have lived on a floating boat village in the center of a Lake to escape the deadly magical infection known colloquially as the Rot which left the continent of Imahaine in ruin and desolation for nearly ninety years. Five years after the Rot suddenly disappeared, the Vashiki have left to rebuild the capital city — all except Amsel Ka-Fal. Accompanied only by self-described "secret tradesman" Bay Kajestial, the mysterious foreigner who originally came to deliver the news of the Rot's disappearance, Amsel is content to spend the rest of his days on his familiar, quiet Lake. Until he happens upon Ku, the very last of an aquatic goat-like creature once considered sacred to his people. Together, Bay and Amsel set out on a journey across Imahaine to bring Ku back to the Butchered Isle: the fabled island between Heaven and Earth where the Old Gods are manifest. But to enter the dwelling place of the Gods is no easy feat: deep within the heart of the Butchered Isle lies the Lost Tides, a cyclopean gate of water only those who are unburdened of soul may pass through. Those deemed unworthy will be trapped within the Lost Tides for eternity.
Setting: Lake Vashik, Vashiki Provence, Tarson, 05 post-Rot.
Genre: Adult fantasy adventure novel
POV: Multi POV, 3rd person present-tense
Characters:
Amsel Ka-Fal Yuen'han: 49, Tarsonian, the last of the Vashiki.
Bayasek 'Bay' Kajestial: 53, Trist, a self-proclaimed secret tradesman with a mysterious past.
Hap'yan Sefaru: 18, Ghontunese, a young Healer-in-training who is unfortunately more gifted in darker forms of magic.
Delya Sarali: 16, Vanlian, the last of the Nodrodian Hawk Hunters.
She'haad Nokali: 57, Yevanusian, the last great pirate captain of the Western Sea.
Vibes: a Great Blue Heron with a snake wrapped around its beak, old maps and scrolls, bioluminescent sea caves, cities built on the bones of an ancient leviathan, ornate gilded bird cages, early mornings & tea with friends, overgrown jungle temples, laughing until your throat hurts, the reflection of the stars on the water at night, salty footprints on a ship's deck, sunken ruins, a soft post-apocalypse.

His mind wanders briefly to that Suli woman in the highlands, her old, clever hands which moved and swayed and flipped with the tides of story, her lazing dog, her peacock-blue earrings. He wonders if she wasn’t a Magician, too. Where exactly does the line end between those who are Gifted and those who aren’t? She had Created something, Weaved fictions until reality bent to her will, and Bay had been awed, though he shouldn’t have been. He thinks, then, of Amsel, knees bent in the grass, the rawboned muscles of his arms flexing against Ma’ashiyo’s embrace, that wide steel blade pressed to his throat, indenting his soft skin. He would have done it, Bay knows, because he would have, too, in the same situation. He thinks of Amsel seemingly accepting his fate with less grace than fury, making his execution a dare. He thinks of Amsel who has always seemed contented yet balked at the word satisfied. He imagines them both, the woman and Amsel, as two Magicians imbuing the world with Kindness and being repaid in blood.

MY WIPS
"You already agreed to it. And here I thought you had a haggler’s soul in you. Your second secret better be a scandalous one or there will be collateral. I don’t want to hear about the time you skimped on fishing duty.” “Collateral?” Amsel repeats, sounding scandalized. The knife clicks against the bench by his side. “And what exactly is this collateral?” Bay shrugs. “I’ll decide if and when it comes to it.” “Oh, and that’s you being a fair and honest tradesman, is it?” “Yes. And to be clear, I never claimed to be honest,” he says, finally allowing himself to turn back to Amsel who is juggling the peeled, pith-woven pomelo between his palms. “Which is very honest of you.”

Monroe just laughs and runs her fingers over the mug's smooth glaze, wondering if that isn’t a bit like how her heart looks: warped and greenish and malformed, with June’s fingerprints all over the surface.

Summary: A decade after the events of Mosswood, Monroe moves to a small town in California where she meets Joey Hart, a self-proclaimed Paranormal Private Investigator who recruits her for his cross-country expedition in search of the supernatural, but as her past and present begin to collide, she finds herself being pulled back to Ponderosa Bay and the darkness that waits in its forests.

The light-leaks and scratches on the old film flicker over her face, masking her reflective white eyes. The video kicks back and loops. “My name is Nettie Schultz and I have died three times,” she repeats.

What a cruel world this is, she thinks, that these are the people who must become protectors, warriors: gentle young men whose hands seem better suited for feeding the hungry, but instead bear the scars of a war that cannot be won.

POV: third-person present-tense
Status: On hiatus / 31k
I am so endlessly self critical about my writing, as many of us are. Writers, reblog with things you love about your writing/wips!!
Things I love about my wip:
unconventional found families
an autistic character who is radically loved & accepted
non-verbal/selectively mute character who does not need to be "fixed"/start speaking
food as a metaphor for love/humanity/community
childhood best friends to lovers (but make it sapphic & with a complicated dynamic)
cozy and dark vibes
fantasy ocean nuns!!
vibrant world-building
dark fantasy with themes of hope and community
kind, caring MC with traditionally feminine qualities that are treated as a strength rather than a sign of weakness/innocence
Why am I incapable of getting past 15k in a project?? I swear I get stuck around there in every new draft
Actually, all Imahaine Cycle stories are about living weapons:
Yje (loves it. Please let her kill for you)
Ikha (doomed)
Hijru (chooses love)
Tesfira (for the lord)
He is no God, no Saint, only a man. Yet she needs something to bleed for.
