I did promise that if I got booped into oblivion yesterday, I would do some cover reveals today, and you guys delivered so here I am.

I am DELIGHTED to announce that we will be reissuing the first two of Charles R. Saunders' Imaro novels early in 2025. These are classics of African Epic Fantasy, the origin of the 'sword and soul' genre. They're THE fantasy if you love Conan, Elric, and expansive sword and sorcery stories.

While sadly these never found commercial success in Charles' lifetime, these books are critically acclaimed, and absolutely beloved by his fans. I'm so excited to be giving them a new lease on life!

Pulptober 2024: 18 - Imaro

I still haven't completely healed from this damned cold, and the preparations for Asexual Awareness Week are progressing... in a very ordered manner, where nothing at all was left to the last possible moment - not. So anyway, I drew this a day late and am posting a day even later.

But damn, did I love Imaro! It is definitely one of the big gems that I discovered through Pulptober, and I am seriously SO SORRY that more people don't know him. Those books deserve all the recognition in the world. I'm still scheming on getting the second one, unfortunately.

The most special thing in those books is definitely the worldbuilding, with all the vastly different cultures, all in Fantasy!Africa. What I really loved was how Imaro's journey is being reflected by them, with him passing to a different biome at key points in the story. So that is what I tried to draw here.

Here's a cartoon strip from The Washington Post by Michael de Adder about a dear friend of his, and how his friend went from being a John Doe to having a memorial stone set at his gravesite.

His friend was Charles Saunders, who wrote the graphic novel IMARO.

[Charles Saunders] had begun writing speculative fiction in the 1970s and published his first novel, “Imaro,” in 1981. As a child he had been enthralled by the fantasies spun by white writers like Robert E. Howard, who created Conan the Barbarian, and Edgar Rice Burroughs, who created Tarzan, the white African figure embodied most famously on the screen by Johnny Weissmuller. But he came to recognize the racism inherent in such works. Imaro was the result.
