“When I was a kid, I didn’t even notice the immigrant thing,” Jaya mused. “I couldn’t even conceive of the idea that it mattered. Some people in my neighborhood were from out of the city, and some people were from out of the country. Where was the distinction, really?”
“I knew,” Raine said. “I mean, I didn’t really know, but I knew.”
“You were always smarter than me.”
Raine tipped his head back. “I think we just had different neighborhoods.”
