It’s headcanon ask game time again! What about Apollo and Edgeworth?

OOOOH I absolutely ADORE this dynamic! Hope I can do it justice!

Spoilers for Dual Destinies! You have been warned!

Realistic Headcanon:

Most of Apollo’s paycheck (post AA4) comes from Edgeworth. This is also going off of the married Narumitsu headcanon, because come on, there’s no way Phoenix would be able to pay Apollo a living wage while also having enough for himself, given how many pro bono cases he takes. So yeah, while Apollo is none the wiser, Edgeworth is making sure the man is able to pay his bills.

Unrealistic (but Hilarious) Headcanon:

In law school, Apollo absolutely idolized Phoenix Wright. Phoenix was his hero, everything he aspired to be when he became a fully-fledged lawyer. However, Apollo also looked up to Edgeworth, and even though Apollo had no intention of becoming a prosecutor, he admired Edgeworth’s integrity and intelligence.

When Apollo first met Edgeworth (which I headcanon as somewhere between the events of AA4 and DD), it’s in the WAA office, where Edgeworth is likely visiting his husband and daughter (perhaps with some more notes to help Wright study for retaking the bar?) Apollo is a bit tentative at first, given how disastrous his first meeting with his other idol went, but that hesitation is gone immediately when he realizes that Edgeworth is exactly how he imagined: punctual, clever, and harboring a burning passion for the law.

Apollo takes to him immediately, eagerly asking question after question. Edgeworth is surprised, but more than happy to answer. Apollo is no less star-struck the next few times he encounters the Chief Prosecutor, and unlike with Phoenix, his respect for the man never truly diminishes. (And maybe Phoenix is a bit jealous of this, but he would take this secret to his grave.)

Heart-Crushing and Awful Headcanon:

After the final trial in Dual Destinies, Edgeworth calls Apollo to his office and gives him a long talk. Unlike all the previous times he and Apollo have chatted, the former answering the latter’s questions or the two simply engaging in friendly debate, the atmosphere is tense and cold. Edgeworth speaks about Apollo’s attitude in court, his tone borderline scolding, and firmly debunks his “evidence is everything” mindset. Apollo is shaking by the end of it (although he tries to hide it), but he doesn’t allow himself to cry.

And Edgeworth hates every second of that conversation. He hates seeing such a bright and determined lawyer practically crumble before him. But he had seen that look before, only a few days prior, when Klavier Gavin sobbed into his arms, a haunted and betrayed look in the young rockstar’s eyes as he rambled about how his brother may have tainted the man he loved.

Edgeworth doesn’t mention Klavier at all during the conversation, but he has a feeling that Apollo is thinking about him as well. By the end of the conversation, Apollo simply thanks him and walks out the door, his steps slightly rushed. Edgeworth barely sleeps that night, echoes of his former mentor’s voice telling him that he hadn’t changed, that he’s still the Demon Prosecutor, that he still carries an evil in his heart that manifests in cold words and a heart incased in ice.

But the next day, Klavier walks into the Prosecutor’s Office with a smile that could rival the sun, and Edgeworth has a feeling that his talk with Apollo was effective, even if it lost him the young man’s admiration.

Except it didn’t, because a while later, when Edgeworth hesitantly asks for the man’s opinion on a case he’s reviewing in an attempt at reconciliation, Apollo’s eyes regain that precious spark and they are locked in debate for hours. Apollo may be a bit more nervous around Edgeworth, but he still respects him a tremendous amount, which isn’t the worst foundation to rebuild trust.

Unrealistic Headcanon That Will Probably Never Happen:

Apollo regularly visits the Chief Prosecutor’s office whenever he has to do something at the Prosecutor’s Building. Often it’s to debate the finer intricacies of the law over a cup of tea, but occasionally it’s to play a game of chess or to ask for advice regarding a specific case.

Although at this point I’m not picky, I just wanna see them interact in canon more! They would have such an interesting dynamic! I feel like Edgeworth would see a younger version of himself in Apollo, bright-eyed and determined and passionate about the law, and would take the younger lawyer under his wing. But maybe that’s just my constant yearning for Dadworth content speaking lol
