I really don’t think these points made by Rebecca Solnit can be made enough re: “preaching to the choir.” It’s such an odd criticism, an expression of “whatever, never mind” cynicism dressed up like a preference for action, assuming a childishly simplistic public discourse, where every question has only one answer, all ideas, relationships, beliefs, priorities, and strategies are stark, fixed and static, and there’s no point in anything other than conversion or defection. Everything that can be said has been said, and nothing is really worth doing. It’s like, “Why should I say I love you when I said it last month? Why should we find more meaning in this passage when we already found some yesterday? Why should I grieve for your mother when I’ve already grieved for your father? Why should we motivate more people when we’ve already motivated ten? Why should I learn new strategies when I already know these three? The making of points is pointless, and the making of meaning is meaningless.”
