So, for those who don't know, I am a vegetarian. This means I do not eat meat. If I was a vegan, that would mean I do not eat any animal products. I was proud of my choice when I made it over 15 years ago, but lately I've seen other vegetarians and vegans acting in ways that are starting to make me regret it. Namely, other non-meat-eaters are acting in ways that judge and shame others for their diets, which is NOT okay. So, without further ado, I present:
Indi The Vegetarian's Guide to Being a Vegetarian or Vegan in a Way that is Tolerant to Others!
1. Understand that humans evolved as meat eaters and were meant to eat meat. If you want to go against that, it's okay! It's awesome! It makes you who you are! But it's not the "true" diet for humans and you need to be aware of that so you can use alternate plant sources to get the nutrition you need.
2. If other people want to eat meat, let them do so without bothering them. It's their choice. You wouldn't want them to bother you about eating vegetarian things, so treat them how you would want to be treated.
3. There is a time and place to talk about being a vegetarian/vegan. Examples of good times to bring it up include:
-When the topic is food-related.
-When the topic is animal-rights related
-When people are going to get together and food will be involved and you want to make sure there will be things you can eat.
-If some one asks you about being a vegetarian/vegan.
Examples of bad times to bring it up include:
-When the topic has nothing to do with food (ie: Here are some pictures of sloths. Become a vegetarian!)
-If people are talking about food but not dietary choices, it's okay to say you are a vegetarian, but it's not okay to go on about mistreatment of livestock/other animals/why everyone ever should go vegan.
4. Biologically, most humans can be vegetarians. Other species? Not so much. Dogs are carnivores. Cats are carnivores. If you have a dog or a cat, you better be feeding them meat. If not? You are an animal abuser and should be prosecuted and feel bad.
5. Not all humans can be vegetarians. Getting proper nutrition with a vegetarian (and especially vegan) lifestyle is expensive (and some areas have it worse than others.) I am fortunate enough to live in a place and class where I can enjoy a vegetarian lifestyle. Not everyone is as fortunate as I am in that way, and I understand that. In addition, there are people with medical conditions who would starve without meat as a food source. They should never be vegetarians. If you try to force your vegetarian/vegan lifestyle on some one who can't afford it and/or can't do it for health reasons, you're not just a dick, you're a classist and/or ableist dick.
6. In most cases, Vegetarianism/Veganism is a choice. In many cases, eating meat is a choice. If you want people to respect your choices, respect their choices. You should NEVER try to force your diet on others.
7. Because it bears repeating: NEVER TRY TO FORCE YOUR DIET ON OTHERS.
That is all I have for now, but everyone please feel free to chime in.
