“Decolonizing Queerness in the Philippines” by Trinidad Escobar
A super interesting, informative, and quick read, this graphic article from the Nib discusses Baybayin, the ancient pre-colonial writing system of the Tagalog people of the Philippines, and how reclaiming it works hand in hand with reclaiming pre-colonial respect and understanding of queer people. A fascinating read, especially if you are like me and have a nerdy love for socio-linguistics!!
Because tumblr is so stupid that its own “article” post type doesn’t work with its system, here is the link to the article: thenib.com/decolonizing-queerness-in-the-philippines
Mattel: Join me in asking Mattel to create the first Cree Barbie.
Hey so I was recently named a Barbie Canada Role Model, one of the 60 women chosen to celebrate Barbie’s birthday in 2019. I am a Cree girl and when I announced this at a school talk I did, a bunch of little Native girls asked me when they could buy my doll. When the news was posted to the Barbie facebook page, a mom said she wanted a doll that looked like me cause I looked like her daughter. I hope you’ll sign the petition to call on Mattel to create a Cree Barbie.
Dongria Kondh Tribe, Odhisa. Also known as 'The real Avatar Tribe', Yes, the 2009 multi billion blockbuster film Avatar made by James Cameron was based on the struggle and culture this tribal group. It was threatened few years ago because of a mining industry project. In 2006, A British private mining company Vedanta set up a factory in Lanjigarg to extract Bauxite with partnership as a joint venture to Odhisa Mining Corporation. The openpit mining and refinery caused negative impact on the environment, the Brown residual liquid polluted the streams of this tribal homeland. Deforestation occurred and many new diseases among locals erupted. Dongria gather almost 200 different foods from their forests and harvest over a hundred crops from their fields. They follow Sarna relegion and speak Kui language. If their lands would be misused the whole community can be threatened for survival in few more years, and with capitalism exploitation comes inevitably. The tribe vowed to save their Niyamgiri Hills and their self-sufficient way of life. So In 2013 the Supreme Court of India ordered the Odisha Government to consult the local tribespeople, citing the protection afforded to the rights of tribal and forest groups under the Forest Rights Act 2006.
