1st October

Sculpture in 60 seconds

Response to this project was not positive, possibly we expanded the brief and made the final product more complicated then what was intended. Visibly I believe that that our final product looked pleasing as we incorporated found materials to create a sculpture with hidden meanings.

Attending my fourth induction at the uni tomorrow, all in a span of two weeks. It’s like I simultaneously know nothing and everything. 

But at least there’s free cake and coffee.

This is the first stop motion task our group was set, with the instructions to show a pendulum swing, thinking about the weight of the ball and how this would affect the movement.We did this using Dragonframe, which was my first time and I think its great, its very easy to use and has everything you want from it. We were a little adventurous with our animation, filming two balls instead of one but I think it turned out pretty well. I really like the addition of the hands letting go and catching the swinging ball. I think makes the animation feel more realistic in that the ball isn’t moving on a surface, but in the air. My critique is that the smaller ball should be moving a little faster and that the big ball, at the peak of the first swing, points upwards too much.

During our induction week we were separated into groups, each of which had to do 4 tasks. The first one was to come up with a definition of graphic design without using the word "communication". Then we were asked to prepare a list of skills that every 21st century designer needs. In the third task we created a diagram to show how we think the course will help us develop the above skills and what we would like to achieve during our education at Salford University. Finally, we had to create 3 collages that would visually represent all the ideas we gathered previously and we also exhibited our work throughout the New Adelphi building (which, by the way, is bright and open but still feels very blank and disorientating to me).

I really enjoyed the tasks and the way our tutors guided us through them. I am also happy that we got to see the other groups’ work, which gave us feedback and a subject to discuss. I got to meet new people and see how different our ideas are, which then helped to me to critically asses my own work.

As always it made me think about a lot of things and ultimately I am glad I took part in the induction :).
