Holy crap lmfaoo i honestly thought this would be the last one anyone would get! And because of that, yes, you're so close i might as well.

#4 is Merlin, a limited series from 1998 (not to be confused with the BBC production from 2008.)

It is... terrible. Ok, guys, it's terrible. Please don't see this as a recommendation unless you're into 90s trash fantasy, then by all means please watch track it down. Just expect a lot of heavy handed Christian hot take propaganda about how they conquered Europe's indigenous populations and people just naturally chose to convert. Also, really really bad special effects and "well that was a choice" performances.

Anyway i don't mean to dunk on this but i started rewatching it for the first time in twenty years after posting this meme... and yikes. Y'all there was SO MUCH i forgot that hits way different in '21 than it did when this came out (and i was like...12?)

But yeah, ironically it's one of the Choice elements that's been my influence for ACoW. Specifically im looking at Queen Mab and Frik, and the whole unearthly weirdness of fae magic. Even if Miranda Richardson was channeling Eartha Kitt by way of acid trip for the whole performance.

Influence Meme: When SS found Mist, she was in some pretty bad shape, but somehow when she's been working for him, she's been in more trouble and hurt more in a few days than her time spent alone. Whether that's from trying to integrate back into society, or just not being good at being a soldier anymore is unknown. But she at least as people to spend time with that don't wanna eat her face, even if she's super uncomfortable being near any of them except two people. Now she's just anxious a lot.

Ha!! No, no one did, you’re the first. I should probably bring that back since I’m still frozen in atm. I will update the meme here in a bit with everything that has been guessed... and maybe if no one guesses the rest I’ll just go ahead and let y’all know what they are. Sound fair?

As for Practical Magic: I love the way that magic feels and is portrayed in that movie. It’s omnipresent, but not in a glitz and glitter sort of way. Like, Sally has a tendency to make her drinks stir themselves when she isn’t thinking about it, and the fact that the sisters are able to feel each other from across the country because they bound each other together as teenagers. Even the love spell being the simple combination of a bunch of flower parts, intentions, and wind.

It’s all magic, sure, but it’s magic that is subtle enough you can believe that the townspeople aren’t 100% sure it’s going on, even as they recognize that the witches are “weird.”

I mean it’s also a bit Found Family (so are a lot of things on this list b/c who doesn’t love Found Family, though BTVS isn’t as big on that trope as the others I guess) but my major vibe here is the whole “Band of teens who join together to protect their town from supernatural forces” thing. There’s no real buffy/ChosenOne equivalent, here, but I kind of feel like that’s a good thing.

That is definitely a spoiler, though a mild one so. There you go. (i am desperately trying to rework the book one pitch so this is more obvious, anyway.)

I know a few for sure such as Cinderella 1997, Strange Magic, Halloweentown, Ella Enchanted, and Princess Mononoke. I also think I know some but I'm not 100% sure, such as The Love Witch, The Labyrinth, Fern Gully, and Charmed?

You have a good eye!! Some of these I’ve already answered, but skipping those...Cinderella (1997)!!!

So this kind of goes along with Ella Enchanted, honestly, but it’s the style. The absolutely gorgeous colours, and outrageous dresses (OK i know they were ‘meant’ to be ugly, but IMHO I loved EVERYTHING the wicked steps had going on.) This matters a little more in world building or supplemental art than in prose, sure, but there’s this dazzling pageantry and glamour to it that I wanted to apply to... certain elements of the cast, shall we say. ;D

Halloween Town - Very similar deal, with added incredibly broomsticks, and the joy of discovering a part of your identity that has been missing (and is very freaking cool to boot.) The way that Marnie feels at home in Halloween town despite never having been there before, and the dynamic she has with her grandmother are very big inspirations.

The rest of them... You are right about Fern Gully, but not the others. (though I am a big Labyrinth fan, just fyi)Fern Gully goes back to that environmental message, particularly with the way the faeries of Fern Gully are linked to the land. How they draw strength from it, and fade without it. There’s also a thread there of the outsider coming in, assuming the world is one way, learning otherwise, and coming to embrace it in the end.
