Hey. People who live in Oregon and are still in high school and plan on going to a community college and getting the Oregon Promise. And are going to be relying on that money to take classes.
Don’t take AP classes unless you know you’re going to pass them and the final tests. This isn’t meant to create stress, neither is it anti-Oregon Promise stuff. I am all for the Oregon Promise and know that it helps a lot of people who can’t afford even community college prices. Its just some advice for those who are going to be going into college in the next few years and aren’t sure where their money for said college is going to be coming from. I know AP classes look good on résumés and applying for colleges but hear me out.
I just found out for myself that with the Oregon Promise there is a limited amount of credits you can have before they shut you off. Makes sense, right? They don’t want people feeding off of them forever. But here’s the thing. Even if you took AP classes in high school and didn’t pass the test at the end of the year. It. Still. Counts. Counts towards the ‘credits’ you’ve ‘attempted’.
For example. I in total in college have accumulated 51 total credits, but on my degree as for now it says 59. I have 8 extra credits that I got in high school(despite taking lots of AP classes and tests). When I went to check on my progress for the Oregon Promise(because in the section of my colleges website what was in place for financial aid was a loan instead of the Oregon Promise grant)I saw that it was still pending, despite the website saying that it should be available in August and lo and behold it was past a week into August. So I emailed them, and after a few emails I finally got this:
“Unfortunately, I can see that you have a total of 93 attempted college credits. If this is accurate, then you would not be awarded Oregon Promise moving forward.”
After a bit more emailing and watching this I found all of what I said above out.
Emphasis on Attempted Credits amirite.
So please, please if you’re still in high school, in Oregon, and are going to be relying on the Oregon Promise for paying for your classes/aiding in paying for classes. Don’t bullshit your AP classes. Do your absolute best. Even if you get a 3 on the AP final exam. Its passing and you get credits.
Don’t get fucked over like me and find out just now.
College bookstores are impossibly picky about the quality of the books you’re selling back to them. So don’t try selling books back to them when its raining. My college has a policy that they can’t buy back books with any liquid damage. Including rain.
