information overload
I am pretty well versed in research. I was an English lit and art history major, I can't even begin to count how many research papers I've written in my lifetime. And that was PRE-INTERNETS! (Gasps of shock and awe go here). So within seconds of hearing the news I did what any good Internet addict does, I went online and started researching diabetes. Now, to be fair, I already had some insight on diabetes. My grandmother was always talking about her "sugar" when I was younger, my step dad in a type 2 insulin dependent diabetic, I have type 1 friends. So I figured this would be a breeze to figure out. Holy. Information. Overload. Every site is different and everyone you ask has different advice. You have to watch sodium intake? That's news. (Good thing we aren't big on salt!) Smoking affects your glucose levels? That's news. Insurance dictates how many strips you can use in a day? WTF?!? So much to learn! What I have learned in the past 24 hours is that I am trying to do too much at once. We need to make a lot of small changes, and it will be trial and error as we go. That and I need a medical jargon to English dictionary. Oh, and I hope diabetic candy tastes better than they did when I was a kid. My grandmas candy was nasty.
