Pin-up ink study. Brush and ink on 11 x 17 Bristol board. Artist Study: Ren Wicks. 1952 Esquire Calendar. Wicks was an all-around artist, in a career that included NASA and postage stamps, but he excelled at two subjects in particular: wings and women. During WW2, he worked for Lockheed, contributing artwork for fighters and bombers that was used both in ad campaigns and in pilot handbooks. During the same period, Howard Hughes tapped him to do poster work for RKO, most memorably for Jane Russell in The Outlaw. Magazine illustration for Esquire, Redbook, Saturday Evening Post, Coronet. Ad work for Kotex, Edwards Coffee, and swimwear companies. This is an exercise I do regularly. I redraw something by an artist I admire as a way to see how they solve problems in their work. I generally have a few of these laying around the studio. It's a good way to get warmed up for inking. Elvgren's work has always amazed me. His pinups usually tell a story. This is going from one his oil paintings to a an ink wash drawing. A bit of an interesting transition. I've also added digital color.
