As soon as the match was over, I waited for a commercial break before I ran toward the back. There were still a few matches on the show, but I knew from experience that Jericho liked to have all of his gear back as soon as possible. He was one of those get a shower, pack up, and roll out kind of wrestlers. Even now that we were stationed in Jacksonville for a while, he was still one of those guys.
I hoped that Tony wouldn’t be upset that I’d left ringside.
By the time I made it backstage, the main event was getting ready to start. It wouldn’t be such a big deal that I wasn’t out there then. It was Archer and Kingston, and neither of them had much extra gear that needed to be managed. The anxiety about leaving my post ended almost as soon as it began.
I dashed down the back hallways of Daily’s Place, dropping carefully folded gear outside locker rooms as I ran toward the Inner Circle’s room. I skidded to a stop just outside the door and knocked firmly. There was no way that I wanted to walk into that locker room and see any of them in any form of undress. Not that I hadn’t already seen it before… unfortunately.
The door cracked open, and Sammy poked his head out. “Hey, Kat,” he panted. Sweat dripped off his face.
I held out the folded vests in my arms. “I just wanted to drop off your gear and see if there’s anything you guys need.”
“Nah, I think we’re…”
Sammy was suddenly yanked out of the way. The door flew wide open and suddenly Jericho was standing there. His face was red, eyes snapping with fire.
“What the fuck were you doing out there?” he shouted, looming over me.
I stammered, completely blindsided about where the vicious anger in his voice came from. “Tony—”
“You almost cost us the match!”
“What?” I asked, completely flabbergasted. How in the world had I done that if I was crouched at the timekeeper’s table picking up discarded gear.
“You shouldn’t have been out there,” Jericho snapped. “Why the fuck were you there?”
My mouth opened and closed. My brain tried to kick into gear. I had to swallow twice before I could figure out how to speak. “Tara was out. Tony asked me to fill in as a ring tech.”
Jericho took two steps forward and grabbed me by the shoulders. “I don’t ever want you out there when I’m in a match. Ever again. Do you hear me?”
He gave me a firm shake before he practically shoved me away and slammed the door in my face.
What the hell was that?
***
Jericho was breathing heavy as he slammed the door. He flattened his hands on the steel and struggled to drag in a breath. He couldn’t quite figure out why he was so viciously angry about the fact that Kat Prince had been ringside. Maybe it was the fact that he’d just looked up and seen her there. Maybe it was the fact that that little shit, MJF, had said those crass things about her. He didn’t know.
He banged his head against the door faintly, trying to get himself together. This wasn’t how this was supposed to go. Whatever this was.
Sammy sidled up next to him, a towel around his neck and worry on his brow. “What the fuck was that, Chris?”
Jericho practically slumped against the door. “I don’t know,” he said at last.
***
My head spun, and I couldn’t think. I tried to take a breath, but it felt like my chest was caving in. It felt like I was going to pass out. Tears rolled down my cheeks for a reason I couldn’t explain. I wanted to run, but I couldn’t even see which way I was supposed to go.
I couldn’t understand what I’d done to make Jericho so mad. All I’d been doing was exactly what Tony asked me to do. How could he say that I’d almost cost them the match? I hadn’t gotten anywhere near the ring once the match started. I’d practically been under the table hidden behind a pile of folded gear.
My breath came in quick gasps as I felt my way down the hallway, hoping that I was going in the direction of the back door. I needed some air. To get away from everything.
“Hey, Kat,” a voice said behind me. I turned, my head spinning. It was Jungle Boy. The moment he looked at me, his brow furrowed with worry. “What’s wrong?”
I swiped at my eyes, trying to wipe away the tears that I didn’t want to explain. I forced myself to take a deep breath. “Nothing. Just a little stressed. What can I do for you?”
He shook his head, waving his hand in the air. “It’s all good. Don’t worry about me. Are you sure you’re okay?”
Before I could stop myself, I was spilling everything that had just happened. Tony asking me to work ringside. Jericho practically screaming at me when I brought the gear jackets back. Once I started talking, I couldn’t stop.

Jericho walked down the hallway slowly, looking in every room he passed. Sammy had made him feel like an absolute asshole about shouting at Kat and slamming the door on her. So, he’d gone on the lookout for her. Figuring that he’d apologize, although he wasn’t entirely sure what he was going to apologize for.
He turned a corner and heard her voice. It was scratchy, like she’d been crying. Jesus fuck, had he made her cry?
“He just screamed at me. That he didn’t want me at the ring for any of his matches. Ever,” he heard her say through sniffles. “I don’t understand, Jack. I’m never ringside ever anyway. I’m backstage. That’s it.”
Jack…
“Jericho’s an asshole a lot,” a voice replied back. He recognized it. Jungle Boy. Jack Perry. “Don’t feel like it’s just you. He does that to a lot of people.”
“I was just doing what Tony told me to do,” Kat replied.
Jericho took a few steps closer and peeked around the corner. Kat was leaning against the wall, Jack Perry facing her on the other side of the hall. He had his hands stuck in his pockets and was watching Kat intently.
Jack reached over and tapped Kat playfully on the chin with his finger. “Hey, ignore him. You do more for those jerkoffs than they deserve. Maybe you should talk to TK about it.”
Shut the fuck up, you little dipshit, Jericho thought vehemently. For some reason just the fact that Kat was talking to Jack made him angry. It was even worse knowing that he was trying to get her to practically ask Tony Khan for a reassignment.
Kat sighed. “Today’s just been so weird. Maybe I’m overthinking.”
“Come on,” Jack said, reaching out his hand to Kat. “The show’s practically over. Let’s go get something to eat.”
Jericho watched as she reached out, took his hand, and followed him down the hallway. Their voices got quieter as they got further away, finally disappearing around the corner at the end of the hall.
I fucking hate that kid, Jericho thought poisonously as he turned on his heel and walked back to the Inner Circle locker room.

I ducked into the staff room and grabbed my stuff. I peeled off the AEW polo and tugged on a t-shirt. By the time I met Jack by the exit gate, he’d already ordered an Uber. He had his rolling bag sitting at his feet, thick curls tied back and his glasses on.
“You look ridiculously like your dad,” I said by way of greeting.
He looked up and grinned, dimples popping on his cheeks. “You say that at least once a week. But thanks.”
I hopped up onto the ledge of the wall at his side, kicking my feet against the stone. “Thanks for this, Jack. For being a great friend.”
Shrugging, he tucked his phone in his pocket and jumped up beside me. “Hey, no problem.” He bumped his shoulder into mine. “I’ll attack him with a chair if you want.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. He was smiling again, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Could you put him in the snare trap, too?”
Jack nodded quickly. “Done. Anybody else we need to take out? Hager being a jerk?”
“God, no. They’re all great.”
A car pulled up at the curb. “That’s us. Where d’you want to eat?”
I threw my bag over my shoulder. “Does Dark Order have a monopoly on Chili’s?”
He sputtered out a laugh as he put his bags in the back of the Uber, reaching out for mine. “I think so.”
“Ugh. Cracker Barrel? Does The Elite own that one?”
“Screw them if they do,” Jack said as he held open the door for me. “But some country fried steak sounds really good right now.”
“Cracker Barrel it is.”

Jericho came through the arena exit just in time to see Kat and Jack Perry getting into a car together. He caught the tail end of their conversation. Something raged in him.
He turned to Sammy and Hager, who stood just a few feet away. “Change of plans, boys. We’re going to Cracker Barrel for dinner.”
