@avenged-nightmare Hey it’s good to hear from you! Thank you for this request and I hope you like it, honey 💙
Y/N was seething. It took every ounce of willpower they had not to blow up at Higgs for being so inconsiderate and condescending. This behavior was typical of Higgs when it came to the average idiot that stood in his way, but Y/N was offended he finally extended the same courtesy to them, especially unwarranted. Y/N couldn’t for the life of them figure out why. They had done everything Higgs had wanted and then some, even going out of their way to come up with a suitable plan for the next delivery route. One that was solid compared to the likes of the others within the porter unit Higgs and themselves were a part of.
After the meeting was over, and Higgs dismissed everyone he took notice at how quickly Y/N left the office and went onto the terminal floor. He nearly sprinted to catch up, standing by Y/N’s side as they got ready to work on the conveyor belts that helped the machines sort through packages before the community underground could get a hold of them.
“Somethin’ tells me you’re pissed off,” Higgs said right off the bat, getting to the point as Y/N rolled their eyes and sighed.
“I didn’t appreciate you putting me down like that in front of everyone.” Y/N said firmly, letting it be known their feelings were hurt.
Higgs rubbed the back of his head, unsure of what to say.
“Darlin’, I don’t believe I’ve done anything wrong. I was bein’ straight up with ya’ll. What’s wrong with critique?”
“You’re questioning my methods. All the while you were being pretentious.”
Higgs raised his brows, chuckling as he shook his head in disbelief before he bluntly stated. “I’m not questioning them, I’m saying they're stupid.”
Y/N’s eyes widened as they tensed, shaking their head and marching off. Higgs meanwhile realized what he had done and slapped his forehead a few times, murmuring he was stupid before taking in a deep breath and running to catch up to Y/N.
“Y/N, okay I’ll admit that was a dick move on my part, Y/N?” Higgs reached out, trying to gently grab a hold of them by the shoulder so they wouldn’t leave the area.
“Don’t touch me, we’re fighting.” Y/N said bitterly, jerking back from Higgs as they turned around and faced him. Their arms crossed as Higgs’s eyes met their own, sizing each other up for the moment before Y/N could see his demeanor loosen up a bit. There was an apologetic look in his gaze that was a rarity to come across. Higgs never said sorry to anybody, not unless he was backed into a corner and was proven wrong time and time again. He was a great leader but needed more practice in the art of tact.
“Look, your plan to get everyone through in one piece was grand. I thought it was brilliant, but you royally fucked up on an important bit.” Higgs said, his voice lowering as Y/N swallowed, feeling their nerves spike from how his tone had dropped. He could be intimidating at times.
“Which was?” Y/N questioned, watching as Higgs sighed, rubbing the back of his neck as his eyes darted around as if trying to read words that popped up in thin air. He eventually settled, forcing himself to look at Y/N with concerning features.
“Keeping your sorry ass safe in the process. You went above and beyond figurin’ out how to keep your teammate's safe venturin’ through BT territory, but neglected your own hide. Either we all survive together, or we all fall together. I don’t want you to forget that.”
Y/N was speechless. They felt tongue-tied trying to find the right words to convey to Higgs how they felt knowing he gave a shit about them. He may not have been eloquent with his explanation, but his tone said enough: he didn’t want anything bad to happen to Y/N, and it upset him greatly they had put themselves in such a position to be sacrificed.
“Does that make sense now?” Higgs asked.
Y/N nodded. “So you do care about me?”
“Pfft,” Higgs made a face then smiled. He reached out, flicking Y/N upside the head. They quickly rubbed at the spot as he looked them over.
“Of course’ I care. If I didn’t, you wouldn’t be on the damn team now would you?”
“I suppose not.” Y/N said with a nervous chuckle, shrugging afterward.
“Next time you get angry, don’t be afraid to be honest with me.” Higgs said sincerely.
“As long as you don’t act like a jackass and put me in the hot seat in front of our colleagues.”
“Cross my heart,” Higgs said teasingly.
“I didn’t know you had one until now.” Y/N retorted.
“Fuck you!”
They both laughed up until Higgs gained his composure and gestured with his head.
“C’mon, I need your help with somethin’ in the cargo bay. If you’re up to it that is.” He teased, trying to get a rise out of Y/N. He chuckled upon seeing them roll their eyes in his direction, walking alongside Higgs as he led the way.
“I’m a lot stronger than you think.” Y/N said in their defense.
A soft smile crossed Higgs’s features, but he didn’t say anything. Their comment was exactly the reason why Higgs had chosen Y/N to be a porter on his team, to begin with: they had a lot of potential most overlooked. He hoped that more of it would come out, especially when the merger between his company and Fragile Express would go down.
