I did not coin this term, it is just an alternative flag with an optional meaning.

Inter-Questioning

Inter-Questioning being basically a term for anyone who is questioning if they’re intersex, for any reason. (Whether it’s due to one’s physical body, familial experiences that imply one is, or possibly simply a mental feeling that one is intersex.)

Inter-Questioning can also include folks who feel confident they’re intersex, but don’t want to self-dx for whatever reason. (Whether it be due to not being 100% sure, or wanting actual confirmation.)

This term was originally posted with a different flag on my original blog sometime back in 2020. It was then posted on this blog on August 22nd, 2022.

We’ve kinda had this mental notion we’re intersex for a couple years now, plus with the whole physical aspect (weird hair growth, looking at ourselves, always been super androgynous during puberty), we’re kinda just in the boat where we don't know that much about specific intersex conditions to where we’d feel confident completely self-dxing as intersex.

This is my wild late night thought on the matter but I wish there was a bigger umbrella term that encompassed intersex, mesosex, etc beneath it so that everyone could feel included under one term. I know intersex by itself is an umbrella but I feel like with how the term and its subterms have evolved we might still benefit from a larger and more inclusive umbrella term above that.

As far as I'm concerned, bigger umbrella term is intersex. 🙃 That's the term that people have been politically organizing under for decades, and I personally think it's better to expand how people see the term than to try to create a new one. 🌈

I just wrote a long post on this but to me, seeing mesosex presented as though it's not intersex is like trying to pass bisexual off as not queer.

Similarly to how queer-questioners are queer from a political organizing mindset, I think people who are extersex, inter-questioning, or otherwise questioning their intersex status are politically intersex. Even if that state is temporary and they eventually figure out they're not intersex. Because to be intersex is to be vulnerable to intersexism, and questioners are totally vulnerable to that.

I think there's value in microlabels within the intersex community, because there's a ton of variety within the community! But yeah not convinced that a superterm is needed, personally. 🤷‍♀️

Also: there's been so many efforts by perisex people to reject the term intersex and replace it with terms they find more legible (e.g. DSD, VSD) that I think a lot of intersex people are going to be generally skeptical about an effort to rename a term that intersex people have fought so hard for.

Is there a label like extersex or nebulasexual where you can't tell if your doubts about being intersex are unfounded or not bc of mental illness (specifically for me, anxiety, OCD, autism)???
