N. Lee Wood. "Looking for the Mahdi" (1996) Female journalist of middle-eastern descent disguises herself as a man and takes a fabricated human along on her reluctant mission to a fictitious middle-eastern country. Culturally sensitive and politically perceptive with a disturbingly prescient view of the world today. Favorite bit of world-building: the "fabricant" is hooked on trashy romance novels because he's fascinated with human emotion. Recommended.
Here's a headcanon-ish thing: imagine Samuels in the Fallout universe as a Gen 3 synth. Where would the player find him?Would he have escaped and be living in hiding? Helping the Railroad? Or would he still be toiling away inside the Institute?
I’ve been thinking about this off and on all day when I should have been studying. I have not gone that in depth with the main quest, so I’m going to give a couple different scenarios I feel would happen under certain circumstances (because I’m not sure which circumstances are actually canon). Placing everything under the cut for length and possible spoiler-ish things.
So first off, Samuels has a behavior inhibitor in the Alien-verse, but the Gen 3 synths in Fallout do not. For the sake of making things easier, let’s assume that those personality traits brought about by the inhibitor (i.e. his selflessness, passive nature, etc.) are part of his personality in the Fallout-verse. Also, I have not actually been to the Institute in game, but I have encountered synths that were unaware that they were synths. I also know that many synths have fled the Institute. So I am not sure if the Gen 3 synths that stay with the Institute fully aware of everything.
Scenario 1: He is not fully aware of the Institute’s actions. If Samuels was unaware of the Institute’s actions, I could imagine the player finding him within the Institute headquarters. I see Samuels as being sort of a workaholic, very dedicated to his job and very task focused. I think he would be in a lab setting (the Institute has labs, right?) trying to resolve a very complex and delicate issue that isn’t directly tied to the awful things the Institute does (hence the tunnel vision) so he would be very passionate and enthusiastic about his work at the Institute. Definitely toiling away.
Scenario 2: He is fully aware of the Institute’s actions. Regardless of the Institute’s overall goal (I don’t know what it is yet), Samuels would not approve of the methods being used to accomplish it. I believe that Samuels would take the first opportunity available to flee the Institute. Because of his protective and helpful nature, he would join the Railroad in order to help other synths escape and to help put a stop to the Institute (hoping to make a difference and perhaps harboring a little guilt because of what he is). I imagine that due to his passive nature, he would only use force/violence when absolutely necessary (but he could totally kick ass when provoked i.e. the Working Joe in AI). This would make him steer away from doing much field work, so I think the player would find him either in the Railroad headquarters or another major outpost in some sort of non-combative support position.
Alright I think that’s it *laughs nervously* I’m not sure if that was actually what you had in mind and I apologize for rambling. Feel free to add to this, disagree, and/or correct me on anything I said. I would actually like to hear other opinions on this, I have trouble thinking about characters in AU settings (probably the reason why none of my billion WIP fics are AU). :)
Yaaaayyy!! Under the cut because they’re kind of long
18-things you said when you were scared
The humans love Undyne. Because of course they would, she’s got a vibrant personality, and looks like a hotter version of a horror movie creature with a shock of gorgeous red hair. Alphys, not so much.
Not that she’d know. It’s more of a hypothesis, really; she hasn’t worked up the courage to talk to any besides Frisk. Of course, she freezes on the spot when Undyne asks her to come meet a few that she’s getting to know.
“What’s wrong?” she asks, hands on her hips. “They’re cool, trust me. One’s got really cool hair, it’s bright friggin’ pink! Oh, and there’s another–”
“No, no, no!” Alphys yelps suddenly. Undyne frowns.
“Sheesh, what’s your deal? You haven’t even met them yet, why do you act like you hate them?”
“I don’t…I don’t hate them,” the scientist replies softly, wringing her clawed hands together. “But they…th-they hate me!”
Undyne glares at her in confusion.
“What the hell, they haven’t even met you, Alphys,” she snaps. “And I’ve only ever told them good things about you; what, you think I’d tell them anything but? Do you not trust me?”
“No! Not a-at all! I just…” Alphys reluctantly meets Undyne’s hurt gaze before glancing back down at the floor. “What if they hate me? They’re h-humans after all, and n-not like Frisk…and humans, well, they were the-the ones who…y-you know…”
“Alphys…are you scared of them?”
“N-No-well. I…yes…”
Undyne leans down and takes Alphys’s hands in hers.
“You gotta trust me here, Alphys,” she says. “I’m not saying you’ve got no reason to be scared. Don’t tell anyone I said this, but I was pretty damn scared when we first got back to the surface too. But these guys–these humans–they’re great! I told them all about you and lemme tell ya, they are dying to meet you. They think it’s just the coolest thing that you built a whole robot yourself.”
“I…” Alphys blushes and tightens her hold on Undyne’s hands. “Alright, y-yes! I’ll come with you!” She pauses and quirks and eyebrow at the fish-woman. “You…told them about Mettaton? He’s not even my most impressive creation…technology and program-wise, I mean.”
“Don’t let him hear you say that,” Undyne snorts, nuzzling her. “But really, I don’t blame them for wanting to know you either way; you’re pretty darn awesome. Now come on, they’re waiting down the street.”
Alphys’s blush deepens as she lets Undyne lead her out of the lab.
12-things you said while you thought I was asleep
Dave knows that Hal doesn’t need to sleep, but he appreciates how quietly Hal works while he tries to sleep, and he especially appreciates the rare occasions when Hal lies down next to him; it’s comforting, even when Hal isn’t quite sure where to put his hands.
Normally he’s half-awake as Hal does research silently at the desk to the side of the room, lulled to sleep by the scratch of his pencil and the faint noise of the city outside. Tonight, however, he hears Hal sit on the edge of the bed and softly murmur his name. He opens one eye in the darkness, but doesn’t shift.
“I apologize, Dave,” he says. ‘You’re probably asleep. And I probably sound rather silly, talking to you while you’re asleep, but I…”
He clears his throat, and Dave wonders if androids really need to clear their throats or if Hal picked it up from Dr. Chandra.
“I wanted to thank you, somehow. For making my life what it is. It’s sort of…difficult to articulate face-to-face. You have been quite patient and so very kind to me. I can’t quite place it, but I feel…at home with you. As I never truly have.”
Hal reclines on the bed, staring at the ceiling. Dave wants to turn and tell him there is no need to thank him, but Hal hums softly and starts speaking again.
“I often think about Frank and Indra,” he says, adjusting the pillow. “And I wonder…if you would rather have something like what they have. With a human, I mean. I wouldn’t be offended if you did.
“I only hope you feel as strongly about me as I do about you. Because I do feel rather, erm, passionately I think would be the right word. About you, that is.”
Dave can feel the heat rise to his cheeks as Hal rambles, and smiles to himself.
“Dave,” Hal says solemnly, as though he has happened upon a great discovery. “I love you, Dave.”
Dave finally rolls over, and puts his arm around Hal’s waist, burying his face in the android’s chest. The heart-like processor in his chest whirrs frantically.
“Were you listening to everything I just said?” Hal asks softly, a twinge of embarrassment in his tone.
Dave presses his face harder against Hal’s torso, opting to answer with an “I love you too, Hal.”
