GLP Medications Are a Product of Fatphobia
The simple fact is that we have a perfectly effective treatment for type 2 diabetes. We have had it for decades. It’s an easy to administer and fairly cheap remedy that manages blood sugar really well with minimal side effects. And even better it’s a hormone that your body already makes. It’s insulin. Insulin prevents the scary complications of untreated diabetes. Unlike GLP medications like Ozempic, Mounjaro and others insulin does not cause blindness, gastroparesis, permanent diarrhea, or contribute to gum disease and tooth decay. Insulin will not slow down your digestive system to a level that makes it dangerous to have emergency surgery. Insulin will not cause pancreatitis or damage your body in a way that forces you to have your gallbladder removed. Insulin will not give you thyroid cancer.
What insulin does tend to do is make you fatter. In a medical system influenced by a deeply fatphobic culture this is a travesty that outweighs any and all of the GLP side effects I listed above. In many countries insulin is very cheap or even free. This is not the case with GLP meds. What could be better than a medication that costs more and has a long list of side effects that we don’t fully understand? Oh right, none of that matters because the downside of any drug is nothing compared to the horrors of being fat. Nothing could ever be worse than being fat. That’s why the medical system pushes surgeries that permanently mutilate fat people’s organs and markets them as weight loss surgeries or the even cuter acronym WLS.
Given all of this information it’s hard not to feel like GLP medications are fundamentally evil. They exist to exploit people who have been made to believe that taking up more space than the dominant culture thinks you deserve is disgusting. Diabetics do not need GLP medications, they need more of the insulin their body makes naturally. Thankfully we know how to package that in a convenient little pen that gives relatively painless injections. If your lifesaving medication also happens to make you fatter though it must be a complete failure that needs to be replaced with a drug that disrupts the entire process that your body uses to sustain itself.
If you use GLP medications to manage your health that is your choice which you have a fundamental right to. But that choice exists as part of a set of options and penalties set up for you by a culture and a medical system that hates fat people. It’s worth questioning how the choices you have might be impacted by that.
The way these asks uphold the system more than a lot of your other blogs. And it isn't their fault but like. "I shouldn't have to lose weight to access medical treatment because I did all the dieting and exercise they told me to and my meds cause weight gain", because it isn't safe to argue "I shouldn't have to lose weight to access medical treatment because nobody should because that's incredibly fucked up"
This is a result of internalized fatphobia.
Dude, just realised that my hatred of eating in front of people is internalised fatphobia.
You didn't deserve to hate your fat body as a kid, and you don't deserve to hate your fat body now.

Shen Yuan gaining weight after his and Binghe's visits to his home world become more frequent. Binghe cooking with Mama Shen and learning Shen Yuan's favorite modern dishes. Shen Yuan not even noticing the weight at first because he's just so used to his immortal body and qi usage quickly burning off calories until one day looking down at Binghe laying his head on his plush stomach...
He has a gut! He has a gut and he's appalled at first. He's always been "fit" is how he's seen it. How can he have a gut? He tells Binghe he needs to go on a diet and to cut down on the portion sizes. Binghe pouts but doesn't argue with him.
But then his parents tell him he looks so healthy now. His face is rounded out and not so gaunt. His hair looks softer and shinier. His eyes have more life in them.
His brothers tell him on video call that he looks better than he did even before he passed out (transmigrated).
Even his sister makes an only slightly disparaging comment about how, of course he had to come out the closet before he learned how to eat right.
Shen Yuan takes these comments in. Looks at himself in the mirror and thinks. "Maybe this really isn’t so bad."
Binghe is squeezing his love handles as they entangle with eachother when it finally clicks for him.
He feels at home in his body for the first time since... maybe ever.
And when Shen Yuan asks Binghe for a second serving at breakfast, and he sees his husband light up, he knows he's made the right decision.
"I am fat and hate my life, i cant believe other people want to live miserable fat lives" this is how some of yall sound. Idc whether youre currently fat, ex-fat, whatever.....why are we trying to perpetuate the cycle of "life sucks as a fat person" whenever anyone tries to be fucking positive. Jesus mary and joseph yall
I really love (hate) how inconsistent women’s dress sizes are. What’s my size? An extra small to an extra large! (I’m loosing my fucking mind)
