I just love Internet pop culture holidays! April 25th? Yes put Miss Congeniality on my dash! May the 4th? Star Wars day!! Let’s go!!!! 21st of September? Blast Earth, Wind, and Fire my dudes!!!

It just makes an otherwise mundane day a little brighter and I think that’s beautiful.

The second Monday in January is National Clean Off Your Desk Day, a chore assigned to you in 1982 by Anne Moeller, the daughter of William D. Chase, who, along with his brother Harrison V. Chase, founded Chase's Calendar of Events, an annual publication first released in 1958 to celebrate fake internet holidays since before there even was an internet.

To celebrate William D. Chase’s now immortalized messy desk, we’re posting this photograph of the decorated desk of the former Miss Davis, a stenographer in the I.C.A. department of the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company's South Philadelphia Works. Her desk was decorated by coworkers on March 6th, 1928 in recognition of her wedding engagement.

This photograph is from Hagley Library’s collection of Westinghouse Electric Corporation Steam Division photographs (Accession 1969.170), which contains a number of similar examples of decorated desks documented by staff photographer Charles Yessel (1877-1953) for the company’s house publication, Machine News. These images offer interesting insights regarding workplace culture, popular ideas about marriage, and gender in the 1920s and 1930s. Do you think internet culture has emphasised “National/ International X Day” or am I just an adult now?

I don’t remember these being a thing prior to like... 2013. 

With globalisation, it would make sense that unity could be sought and found through celebrations like these and focusing content around themes helps organize the chaotic void of cyberspace. I can find lots of cultural and social reasons for them to have grown in popularity and designation, but I was also a kid in a conservative system that thought children were servers of their parents, so the idea of a father’s/mother’s day was important, but a kid’s day? Unheard of, or maybe I was just a kid and not exposed to that kind of culture around me? 

I dunno, I need more context, what’s your experience with these international/national x days? 

BTW, Im not hating on them at all, they’re just interesting to me and I have some opinions involving tokenisation and how designating a celebratory period allows the exclusion of those topics in general knowledge, discussion, and education, but also require focus due to complex history and disregard for minority people in America, so I have opinions that are in direct opposition to other opinions and values that I also have and it confuses me and I would love more opinions to add to this party! <3
