Intersectionality as a concept began with Kimberlé Crenshaw, who coined the phrase to discuss the unique discrimination that people of color and women face in her Stanford Review article titled Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence against Women of Color. “Although racism and sexism readily intersect in the lives of real people, they seldom do in feminist and antiracist practices. And so, when the practices expound identity as women or person of color as an either/or proposition, they relegate the identity of women of color to location that resists telling,” Crenshaw wrote. When feminism asks people to focus on women without taking into account their other identities that contribute to their oppression, it may prescribe the wrong treatment to the problem. When the problems of women of color and the problems of white women are treated the same way, the outcomes of the scenarios will be wildly different because the circumstances are wildly different.
